If. From the perspective of all defilements and complete purification, it is the consciousness of mind, because it is the place of desire and so on, and faith and so on. In this way, it is also shown that the term "mind" encompasses all consciousnesses. What is called consciousness is the collection of the six consciousnesses that rely on the senses, discriminate objects, and thus abide and enter. So, what are the places of these? They are the Alaya consciousness and the afflicted mind, and the place of the mind's consciousness is twofold: the place of the seed is the Alaya consciousness itself. The immediately preceding place is the mind. The place of the mind's consciousness is also the afflicted mind, because if it does not cease, the bonds of discrimination cannot be liberated, and if it ceases, it can be liberated. The place of the five sense consciousnesses is threefold: the senses are the place of simultaneous arising. The mind is the immediately preceding place. The Alaya consciousness, which contains all seeds, enables the body to arise, and contains the ripened results, is the place of the seed. So, what are the objects of these? The objects of the Alaya consciousness are twofold: the inner taking and the outer container world without interruption. The object of the afflicted mind is to grasp the Alaya consciousness as self. The object of the mind's consciousness is all dharmas, which include the realm of self-nature, self, common characteristics, the three times, and the stream of moments. The objects of the five sense consciousnesses are all the self-characteristics contained in the present time and moment. Among them, the object of eye consciousness is visible and obstructive form. The objects of ear, nose, tongue, and body consciousness are sound, smell, taste, and touch, which are invisible and obstructive. So, what are the companions of these? They are those mental factors that arise simultaneously and are in accordance with them. So, what are the actions of these? In short, there are four types: discriminating the container, discriminating the place, discriminating as self, and discriminating the object.

It is consciousness. Among them, the first two are the function of the alaya-consciousness, because it is constantly objectifying, the external container world is uninterrupted, and it can distinguish the internal reception. The third is the function of the afflicted mind, because it can bind. The last is the function of the six entering consciousnesses, because they can abide by distinguishing the object. If the function of the entering consciousnesses is distinguished in detail, then the function of the mind consciousness is to distinguish the object of one's own and others' realms, to distinguish one's own and common nature, to distinguish the three times, to distinguish the continuum of moments, to distinguish the virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas and actions, and to follow them, and also to completely grasp the lovely and unlovely fruits of other aggregates of consciousness, because the similar cause arising from its cause can universally arise. These are the aggregates of consciousness and the common and uncommon functions with other aggregates of consciousness. Moreover, among the other aggregates of consciousness, the functions that are particularly distinct in all respects are fourteen, namely, to generate discrimination towards the object, to attend to the object, to intoxicate, to madden, to cause to fall asleep, to awaken, to cause to faint, to awaken from fainting, to enable the activities of body and speech to proceed, to cause complete loss from detachment, to make virtuous roots uninterrupted, to connect virtuous roots continuously, and to cause death and birth. The function of the five sense consciousnesses, if briefly summarized, should be observed as six types, namely, to distinguish one's own realm, to distinguish one's own nature, to distinguish the present time, to distinguish one moment, to follow the mind consciousness in two ways, namely, to follow virtue and affliction.

It accords with entering, accords with the arising of all actions, and is able to fully grasp the fruits of what is pleasing and displeasing. How should the existence and distinctions of the ālaya-vijñāna be understood? The existence of the ālaya-vijñāna is comprehended through eight aspects, and its distinctions are understood through the establishment of entering and ceasing. What are the eight aspects through which the existence of the ālaya-vijñāna is comprehended? Namely, if there were no ālaya-vijñāna, taking rebirth would be impossible, initial entry would be impossible, clear entry would be impossible, the seed itself would be impossible, action would be impossible, bodily sensation would be impossible, mindless absorption would be impossible, and the transference of consciousness at death would be impossible. How is it that if there were no ālaya-vijñāna, taking rebirth would be impossible? There are five causes: the ālaya-vijñāna arises from the cause of previously accumulated actions, therefore it causes rebirth, but the entering consciousnesses arise from present conditions, therefore they do not cause rebirth, this is the first cause. Furthermore, the ālaya-vijñāna is unspecified, therefore it causes rebirth, but the entering consciousnesses appear as virtuous and non-virtuous, therefore they do not cause rebirth, this is the second cause. Furthermore, the ālaya-vijñāna is a type included in the unspecified ripening, therefore it causes rebirth, but for the entering consciousnesses, whatever type is included in the unspecified ripening is an object, therefore they do not cause rebirth, this is the third cause. Furthermore, the ālaya-vijñāna pervades all bodies, therefore it causes rebirth, but the entering consciousnesses arise separately from definite locations, therefore the consciousness arises from whatever location it is held by that location, but the location from which consciousness has not arisen does not hold that location, therefore
