Now, these four aspects, distinguished by their basis, aspect, nature, and direction, are the very essence of one-pointedness of mind. Among these, the basis is the hearing and contemplation that precedes the Bodhisattva's treasury. The aspects are worldly and transcendental. The nature is the one-pointedness of mind abiding in virtue. The directions are the direction of tranquility, the direction of insight, and whichever is the direction of the path of union. What are all the meditations? There are two kinds: worldly and transcendental. Furthermore, according to circumstances, there are three kinds: meditation practiced for the sake of dwelling in happiness in this life, meditation practiced for the sake of accomplishing the qualities of the Bodhisattva's samadhi, and meditation practiced for the sake of benefiting sentient beings. What is difficult meditation? There are three kinds: the Bodhisattva abiding in meditation, directly realizing vast, diverse, and extremely familiar states, freely abandoning that supreme bliss of meditation from those states, and being born in the desire realm for the sake of sentient beings; the Bodhisattva relying on meditation, directly realizing the immeasurable, countless, inconceivable meditations of the Bodhisattva, completely transcending all the realms of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas; the Bodhisattva relying on meditation, directly and completely awakening to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. From all doors, what is meditation? There are four kinds: with investigation and analysis, with joy, with successive bliss, and with equanimity. What is the meditation of a noble person? There are five kinds: without sensation, with loving-kindness, with compassion, with joy, and with equanimity. What is meditation of all aspects? There are six qualities and seven aspects, totaling thirteen in general. Among these, the six qualities are: virtuous meditation, meditation of transformation and non-prediction of transformation, meditation of the direction of tranquility, meditation of the direction of insight, and meditation that well ascertains the benefit of oneself and others.
