A Bodhisattva prevents those things that should be prevented from sentient beings, allows those things that should be allowed, gathers those things that should be gathered, subdues those things that should be subdued, and possesses the discipline of generosity, possesses patience, possesses diligence, possesses the discipline of meditation, possesses the discipline of wisdom, and what is pure discipline? There are ten aspects: well-taken from the very beginning, not too timid, not too excessive, completely grasped by mindfulness, well-made aspirations, completely grasped by perfect rituals, completely grasped by perfect livelihood, completely abandoning the two extremes, decisive, and completely without deterioration. The nine aspects of patience are also as before. What is the nature of patience? It is indifference that possesses four distinctions: the distinction of the basis, the distinction of the place, the distinction of the object, and the distinction of the cause. The distinction of the basis is relying on the power of individual investigation and the power of cultivation. The distinction of the place is abiding in all sentient beings, friends, enemies, ordinary people, happiness and suffering, and neither suffering nor happiness. The distinction of the object is focusing on all harm, suffering, and conceptualizations of the Dharma. The distinction of the cause is indifference with a mind free from defilement and solely with compassion. What is all patience? There are two aspects: relying on the side of householders and relying on the side of renunciants. Accordingly, there are three aspects: patience of indifference to others causing harm, patience of accepting suffering, and patience of devotion to definite thought of the Dharma. What is difficult patience? There are three aspects: enduring harm done by weak sentient beings, enduring harm done by servants when one is a lord, and enduring great harm done by sentient beings who are masters with extremely low lineage and ancestry. What is patience through all doors? There are four aspects.
