Even towards those who cause harm, one purifies them with a rod oneself, and even if one is made unhappy, one does not involve others in disputes, thinking it is acceptable to be unhappy. Furthermore, taking that as a cause, arising from intolerance, one mostly possesses shame and embarrassment. Arising from patience, one mostly holds the teacher with affection and respect, and possesses reverence. Arising from not harming sentient beings in any way, one mostly possesses the thought of compassion towards sentient beings. And all Dharma friends who are intolerant, having abandoned everything from all things, are thus separated from the attachment of desire. The nine aspects of diligence are also as before. So, what is the nature of diligence? It is complete exertion with the four distinctions: object, aspect, application, and conducive cause. Among these, the object is to gather immeasurable virtuous dharmas and to accomplish the benefit of sentient beings. The aspect is the mind manifesting joy. The application is the purified, uninterrupted, and non-inverted. The conducive cause is the complete exertion of body, speech, and mind arising from that. What are all the diligences? There are two types: those based on the side of householders and those based on the side of renunciates. These are appropriately divided into three types: armor-like diligence, accumulating virtuous dharmas, and accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings. What is joyful diligence? There are three aspects: not considering clothes, food, wealth, places, and cushions as one's own, but constantly and continuously engaging in the practice of virtuous dharmas, and initiating diligence at all times until one has not abandoned one's own kind, entering in such a way, and possessing the qualities of understanding equality, being neither too lax nor too hasty, possessing diligence that is non-inverted and meaningful. What is diligence through all doors? There are four aspects: it enables the complete abandonment of afflictive dharmas, it enables the accomplishment of white dharmas, it enables the complete purification of karma, and it enables the increase of wisdom. What is the diligence of a noble person? There are five aspects: not abandoning, etc.
