The ripening of those roots of virtue is without hoping to be a Chakravartin, without hoping to be Indra, without hoping to be a Mara, without hoping to be Brahma, and without relying on benefiting from others, without relying on gain, respect, and offerings. Furthermore, purification is through three causes: namely, purification, non-reversal, and extreme purification. Among these, purification and non-reversal are the roots of virtue that have entered the ground of pure superior intention. What is called purification is that which, through individual examination and action, is inherently stable, clear, has great fruit, and has great benefit. What is called non-reversal is that from whatever roots of virtue have been obtained, and however they have been accumulated, there is no turning back, no complete deterioration, and there is excellence. Extreme purification is the root of virtue that is definitive and ultimate; on the Bodhisattva ground, it is the most completely pure of those, and there is nothing superior to it. Thus, the root of virtue is practiced pervasively with three causes, is excellent with two causes, and is purified with three causes, which is called extreme purification. Because of the very accomplishment, what is called very accomplishment is that the root of virtue is extremely pure, and that is also truly accomplished, namely, the Bodhisattva's own lineage, and the initial generation of the mind, and the order of engaging in the Bodhisattva's conduct is truly accomplished. Thus, as the Bodhisattva relies on and abides in his own lineage, he becomes capable and powerful to manifest complete enlightenment in unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Therefore, one's own lineage is the basis of having the capacity. Relying on and abiding in the initial generation of the mind, one engages in generosity and so forth, the accumulations of merit and wisdom, and all the factors of enlightenment, therefore, the initial generation of the mind is the basis for engaging in the Bodhisattva's conduct. Relying on and abiding in that very engagement in the Bodhisattva's conduct, one will manifest complete enlightenment in unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, therefore, engaging in the Bodhisattva's conduct is the basis for perfecting great enlightenment. Therefore, those three bases

The root of virtue, which is extremely pure, is gradually and truly accomplished. Because it is truly accomplished, one can take rebirth by examining each separately. The reason for taking rebirth by examining each separately is that the root of virtue is extremely pure and truly accomplished, and its result is that the previous births of Bodhisattvas are shown to be pure, and should be combined accordingly. The reason for having compassion that completely protects all beings is the cause of what will be said below: that one is not defiled by all afflictions, and that one is able to avert the afflictions of others. The previous compassion of the Bodhisattva is shown to be pure, and should be combined accordingly. The reason for not being defiled by all afflictions and for being able to avert the afflictions of others is the result of having compassion that completely protects all beings. The reason for not being defiled by all afflictions is that the Bodhisattva is skilled in means, having six aspects arising from the accomplishment of the complete maturation of the Buddha's Dharma within oneself. What are the six? They are that the Bodhisattva sees all sentient beings with compassion, and completely understands all phenomena as they are, and desires the wisdom of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and relying on seeing all sentient beings with compassion, does not abandon samsara, and relying on completely knowing all phenomena as they are, goes from samsara to samsara with a mind that is not defiled by all afflictions, and relying on desiring the wisdom of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, blazes with diligence. The reason for being able to avert the afflictions of others is that the Bodhisattva is skilled in means, having six aspects arising from the accomplishment of the complete maturation of other sentient beings. What are the six? They are that the Bodhisattva accomplishes the small roots of virtue of sentient beings into immeasurable fruits, and when accumulating a small amount, the roots of virtue are vast and
