Explaining the Dharma, and explaining the Dharma separately, small combination, medium combination, large combination, listening, thinking, meditating, collecting, eliminating, doing oneself, striving for others, and combining the two. The individuals who ripen are the Bodhisattvas who abide in the six grounds, namely: the Bodhisattva who abides in the ground of adhimukti-caryā performs adhimukti-caryā, the Bodhisattva who abides in the ground of purified superior intention purifies superior intention, the Bodhisattva who enters into practice enters into practice, the Bodhisattva of certainty becomes certain, the Bodhisattva who abides in the ground of accomplishing definite practice enters into definite practice, and the Bodhisattva who abides in the ultimate ground becomes ultimate. The characteristics of the individual who is ripened are the characteristics of the small, medium, and large ripenings of the individuals who have been ripened by the three vehicles. Among them, the Śrāvaka is accustomed to virtue in the past, and when he abides in the small ripening, his aspiration is small and his combination is small, and he also goes to the lower realms, and in that life he does not attain the fruit of a Śramaṇa, nor does he attain Nirvāṇa in that life. When he abides in the medium ripening, his aspiration is medium and his combination is medium, and he does not go to the lower realms, and in that life he attains the fruit of a Śramaṇa, but he does not attain Nirvāṇa. When he abides in the large ripening, his aspiration is large and his combination is large, and he does not go to the lower realms, and in this life he attains the fruit of a Śramaṇa and also attains Nirvāṇa. The characteristics of ripening by the vehicle of the Pratyekabuddha should be understood to be the same as those of the Śrāvaka. The characteristics of ripening by the Mahāyāna are that abiding in the ground of adhimukti-caryā is small ripening, and with small aspiration and small combination, one also goes to the lower realms, and it belongs to the very beginning of countless eons, cultivating virtuous dharmas that are in accordance with the factors of enlightenment and

unwavering, and not possessing all that is utterly pure. Those who dwell on the ground of pure superior intention are of medium maturation, because their aspiration is medium and their application is medium, so they do not go to the evil destinies, and they belong to the second immeasurable kalpa, having cultivated virtuous dharmas that are in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment, and they are not unwavering and do not possess utter purity. Those who are definite and ultimate are of great maturation, because their aspiration is great and their application is great, so they also do not go to the evil destinies, and they belong to the third immeasurable kalpa, having cultivated virtuous dharmas that are in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment, and they possess unwaveringness and all utter purity. Among these, cultivation means individually examining and acting, being naturally firm, clear, having great results and great benefits. Unwavering means that whatever roots of virtue have been obtained, and however they have been accumulated, one does not turn back from those, does not diminish at all, and especially increases. Utter purity means that on the bodhisattva grounds, from those, the most utterly pure is unsurpassed. Maturing sentient beings, that is also on the first ground, in a single instant one can mature a hundred sentient beings, thus it is taught, that up to the buddha ground, it becomes more and more utterly pure. Pure birth means that bodhisattvas have four kinds of birth: birth by the power of karma, birth by the power of aspiration, birth by the power of samadhi, and birth by the power of effort. Among these, birth by the power of karma means that those who dwell on the ground of practice through faith are born in the desire realm by the power of karma. Birth by the power of aspiration means that those who have entered the grounds are born in evil destinies such as animals by the power of aspiration in order to mature sentient beings. Birth by the power of samadhi means that those who have attained meditative absorption are born in the desire realm by reversing their meditative absorption. Birth by the power of effort means that emanations are born in places such as the Tushita heaven. The superior

No matter where those rebirths fall, up to the pure realm, the rebirths of Bodhisattvas, for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, are faultless. In short, there are five types: rebirth that pacifies harm, rebirth that corresponds equally to it, great rebirth, lordly rebirth, and the final rebirth. Among these, the rebirth that pacifies harm is the rebirth that pacifies the harm caused by famine, the rebirth that pacifies the harm caused by imbalance, the rebirth that pacifies the harm caused by others' transformations, and the rebirth that pacifies the harm caused by wrong views. Among these, the rebirth that pacifies the harm caused by famine is when Bodhisattvas, in times when the world is afflicted by famine and great harm occurs, make aspirations to enable sentient beings to subsist with little effort, and they themselves are born into life forms such as great fish, satisfying all beings with their own flesh. The rebirth that pacifies the harm caused by imbalance is when, in the world, sentient beings suffer from many diseases of imbalance, they make aspirations to completely pacify these diseases, and they themselves fully take on the body of a great physician who has mastered mantra and completely pacifies the diseases of sentient beings. The rebirth that pacifies the harm caused by others' transformations is the rebirth that pacifies the harm caused by enemy armies. For sentient beings who are severely harmed by enemy armies, with skillful means of fairness and justice, in order to completely pacify the harm of the enemy armies, they themselves take on the body of a powerful king and completely pacify their harm; and the rebirth that pacifies the harm caused by mutual discord, for sentient beings who are resentful and mutually discordant, in order to reconcile and abandon hatred, they
