That is to say, it is called "action" because it can simultaneously grasp objects such as form. The so-called "discrimination" is because it can definitely recognize and recall. The so-called "consciousness of mind," of which "manas" (Tibetan: མ་ན་, Sanskrit Devanagari: मनस्, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: manas, literal Chinese meaning: mind) refers to the various consciousnesses that enter. That which can distinguish them is manas-vijñāna (Tibetan: མ་ན་བི་ཛྙཱ་ན་, Sanskrit Devanagari: मनोविज्ञान, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: manovijñāna, literal Chinese meaning: mind consciousness), which is what is called "consciousness of consciousness." It has two functions, common and uncommon. The common function is indicated by "simultaneously grasping internal and external objects." External objects refer to form, etc. Internal objects refer to the senses, mind, and mental factors. It is said to "simultaneously grasp" because it can simultaneously experience the feelings arising from internal and external objects. The uncommon function is indicated by "a moment, a while, a short time," etc. The so-called "simultaneously entering into many samādhis" means thinking that the activities of many samādhis should be accomplished alone, and thereby entering into many samādhis. Regarding "seeing many Buddha-fields, seeing many Tathāgatas," if seeing is the object of eye-consciousness, how can mind-consciousness see? This is because mind-consciousness arises from proximity, and it is the same as all entering consciousnesses, as well as the place and object of focus, so there is no contradiction in seeing. For example, like the actions of body and speech arising from thought. Discriminating the arising of the mind with a small aspect of the object, for example, the arising of a mind with desire, is because it is a small realm and an un-abiding place. Discriminating the arising of the mind with a large aspect of the object, for example, the arising of a mind with form, is because it is a large realm and an un-abiding place. Discriminating the arising of the mind with an immeasurable aspect of the object, for example, the arising of a mind with space and the sphere of infinite consciousness, is because it is the sphere of immeasurable thought that thinks of infinity. Discriminating the arising of the mind with a subtle aspect of the object, for example,

The arising of the mind that possesses the sphere of nothingness is because it is a subtle ground that possesses the view of the aggregates and thinks, "There is nothing." The ultimate aspect of the object, the arising of the mind of discernment, is the arising of the mind that possesses the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, because it is the ultimate of realms, grounds, and worldly paths. The arising of the mind of discernment without characteristics is the arising of the mind that is transcendent of the world and focused on cessation, because transcendence of the world is non-conceptual, and focusing on the cessation attainment is without characteristics. The arising of the mind that possesses suffering is the arising of the mind of sentient beings in hell, because the feeling of equanimity of their base consciousness is overwhelmed by the sudden feeling of suffering. The arising of the mind that possesses the leading of feeling is the arising of the mind that engages in desire, because the maturation of karma possesses leading. The arising of the mind that possesses joy is the arising of the mind of the first and second dhyanas, because it possesses the joy born of solitude and the joy born of samadhi. The arising of the mind that possesses bliss is the arising of the mind of the third dhyana, because it possesses the bliss born of inner purity. The arising of the mind that is neither suffering nor bliss is the arising of the mind between the fourth dhyana and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, which is the eighth fault. Because it is free from investigation, analysis, inhalation, exhalation, pleasure, pain, pleasantness, and unpleasantness. The arising of the mind that possesses afflictions is the arising of the mind that possesses afflictions and near afflictions, which refers to all states of mind that possess an afflicted mind.
