Regarding the characteristics of affliction and purification, it refers to the mind itself and those (dharmas) that arise from the mind. With respect to their location and the objects of focus, namely internal dharmas, external dharmas, and dharmas that are both internal and external, when one contemplates the dharmas and abides in mindfulness of the dharmas, due to not realizing these dharmas, suffering and arising occur. In the manner of selflessness, they become the characteristics of all afflictions, as well as the characteristics of their suchness. Realizing these dharmas, in the manner of cessation and the path, and selflessness, they become the characteristics of purification, as well as the characteristics of their suchness. Whatever appears as the image of the object of meditative absorption is here called the characteristics of the mind's affliction and purification. The internal characteristic refers to the aspect of realizing internal emptiness. The external characteristic refers to the aspect of realizing external emptiness. The characteristic of both refers to the aspect of realizing the emptiness of both internal and external. The characteristic of thinking, 'I shall apply it to the benefit of all sentient beings,' refers to the aspect of realizing emptiness as emptiness, because both internal and external are empty in that way. If one thinks that nothing can be accomplished in emptiness, and thus abandons the benefit of sentient beings, as an antidote, the emptiness that thinks nothing can be accomplished is also empty, and thus one wishes to apply it to the benefit of all sentient beings, realizing emptiness as emptiness. The characteristic of consciousness refers to the aspect of realizing great emptiness, realizing that all realms of the ten directions are not external objects but are the very nature of consciousness. The characteristics of suchness, suffering, arising, cessation, and the path refer to the aspect of realizing ultimate emptiness, realizing the undifferentiated suchness and the differentiated Four Noble Truths. The characteristic of the conditioned refers to the aspect of realizing the emptiness of the conditioned, realizing the conditioned as emptiness. The characteristic of the unconditioned refers to the aspect of realizing the emptiness of the unconditioned, realizing the unconditioned as emptiness. The permanent
