And, considering the thoughts of those who think that all feelings will cease. World Honored One, how should a Bodhisattva practice calm abiding and insight to attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment and become a Buddha? Like this, three questions were asked. Among them, the first question and its answer indicate that in order to eliminate the idea of not having a strong desire to practice calm abiding and insight, and to prevent it from being wasted, the establishment is determined. The remaining two questions and their answers indicate this through explanation. Maitreya, here, after a Bodhisattva attains calm abiding and insight, this is combined with the stage of mental engagement of the path initially combined, obtaining the objects of perception of both conceptual and non-conceptual images. Starting from the seven suchnesses, etc., it shows how to obtain the object of perception of the dual path. The seven suchnesses refer to the previously shown arising suchness, etc. How to apply to the Dharma that has been heard and thought about, etc., refers to classifying the Dharma establishments that are the objects of perception of calm abiding and insight and the seven suchnesses. This shows the wisdom arising from hearing and thinking. With a mind in equanimity, this shows the wisdom arising from meditation. Being good at grasping, being good at thinking, and being good at classifying, this refers to the order of the three wisdoms. Only this shows that suchness can be mentally engaged within. Suchness is mentally engaged within, which means understanding the meaning of the seven suchnesses as mind-only, and then repeatedly contemplating from mind-only, thereby mentally engaging suchness within. When suchness is mentally engaged in this way, etc., it shows the transcendence of the mental engagement of the ultimate path of union, the arising of the dual path of the first ground, and the order of the objects of perception at the edge of things. Subtle characteristics refer to the nature of other-dependence, the nature of discrimination. If the mind is placed in greater equanimity, this refers to the completely imputed.

If one does not cling to the manifestation of self-nature, that is the so-called concluding word. The coarse sign refers to the conceptual distinctions of terms, that is, the designations of words for "form" and so on. Maitreya, these subtle signs are like this. For the twenty-one subtle signs, the meaning of the first four should be understood by following the order of the four mindfulnesses. The meaning of the rest should be understood by following the sixteen emptinesses. For the non-abandoning emptiness, one should use a sign combined with two words. For the emptiness of self-nature, there are two signs. The rest should be understood in connection with each sign. The so-called sign of taking of the mind refers to the two causes of the continuity of the Alaya consciousness, namely, the habit of clinging to the manifestation of the self-nature of the completely conceptualized, and the colored roots related to the support. After taking these, for the inner body and the outer body, and the body of both inner and outer, observing according to the body, and abiding in the mindfulness of the body, the body has the sign of impurity, and the sign of suchness, that is, the object of meditation, appearing as the form of an image, this is called the sign of taking of the mind. The so-called sign of feeling refers to the ignorance of the self of the mind itself, and the view of the self, the pride of the self, and the attachment to the self. Therefore, for the inner feeling and the outer feeling, and the feeling of both inner and outer, observing according to the feeling, and abiding in the mindfulness of the feeling, the feeling has the sign of suffering, and the sign of suchness, that is, the object of meditation, appearing as the form of an image, this is called the sign of feeling of the mind. The so-called sign of consciousness refers to the object of consciousness of the mind itself. Therefore, the inner mind and the outer mind, and the mind of both inner and outer, which are recognized only in the mind, observing according to the mind, and the mind abiding in near mindfulness, the mind has the sign of impermanence, and the sign of suchness, that is, the object of meditation, appearing as the form of an image, this is called the sign of consciousness of the mind.
