In order to In order to explain the determination of imputation. What are the five kinds of obstacles spoken by the Blessed One, please ask from those onwards. It is necessary to know which path the five obstacles, five obscurations, and five kinds of distractions belong to, and to eliminate them, and to explain the combination with the nature of calm abiding and insight, starting from the meaning of combination. In order to prevent the teachings of generosity from being in vain, the determination of imputation is explained. The five kinds of obstacles refer to: observing the body, observing enjoyment, not hearing the words of the noble ones as desired, staying mixed up, and being content with little, that is, not being attached to the merits of desire, and obstructing the attainment of transcendental dharma, therefore it is called an obstacle. Observing the body means being attached to the inner birth place. Observing enjoyment means being attached to the external birth place. These two are the nature of the desire of affliction and the desire for desire, therefore they are aspects that do not conform to the purity of discipline, so they are obstacles to calm abiding. Not hearing the words of the noble ones as desired means not obtaining from the decisive words, from the two aspects of hearing and thinking. That is the aspect that does not conform to the purity of the view arising from hearing and thinking, so it is an obstacle to superior insight. Staying mixed up means the body is not solitary. Being content with little means the mind is not solitary. Among them, staying mixed up does not combine with calm abiding and insight, while being content with little does not make the combination reach the ultimate, so these two are obstacles to both calm abiding and insight. The five obscurations refer to agitation, regret, drowsiness, sleep, doubt, desire for desire, and aversion. Because they cover and obscure that meaning, they are called obscurations. Among them, agitation refers to relying on relatives, places, and the thought of immortality, recalling past laughter, play, joy, and enjoyment, which is a mind that is not calm and scattered.

What kind of arising is it? Regret is the thought of relatives and so on: Why did I abandon them and become ordained? Due to such causes, regret and cherishing arise in the mind. Therefore, agitation and regret are considered one obscuration because they share a common basis. Furthermore, regret is about not doing what should have been done, doing what should not have been done, and not realizing the initial regret, so that the entanglement of regret cannot be eliminated. In later times, regret and remorse arise in the mind stream. Although this does not share the same basis as agitation, just as agitation cannot pacify the mind with its distracting nature, so too this cannot pacify the mind with its unpleasant nature. Therefore, here too, because it has the same function as agitation, it is considered one obscuration. It obscures the true meaning of the remaining mind, and therefore it is an obscuration to calm abiding. Dullness is the arising of all afflictions that have not been counteracted, based on deficiencies in discipline, view, and livelihood, and the corresponding dullness of body and mind, making one unable to function. Sleep is the complete withdrawal of the mind. Dullness destroys the effort of counteraction by arousing afflictions, while sleep destroys the effort of counteraction by completely withdrawing the mind. Because they have the same function, they are considered one obscuration. Doubt is hesitation and uncertainty about the teacher, the Dharma, the training, the instructions, the subsequent teachings, realization, or the three times. Among them, dullness causes the state of being unable to function, and sleep causes it by completely withdrawing the mind. Doubt is hesitating between two, and it obscures the true meaning of superior wisdom, therefore they are obscurations to superior seeing. Desire is following after attractive signs, and desire for the five desirable qualities, and the desire that arises from remembering past experiences. Aversion is the mind that is tormented by remembering any cause of anger.

And the mental torment that arises from the mind that mostly reflects on the cause of anger, which is the desire to harm. These two are the obstacles to both, because they obscure the meaning of just that, the path of calm abiding and insight, which are distinguished by being separate from desire and separate from sinful, unwholesome dharmas. Having shown the obstacles in this way, it starts from the meaning of applying oneself to the complete purification of the path of calm abiding and insight by abandoning them, and in order to show the establishment of certainty so that the giving of instructions is not wasted. The Blessed One asked how much, etc. Dullness and sleep are what cause inward shrinking, so if these two are well and completely stopped, then the path of calm abiding is completely purified. Excitement and regret are what cause outward distraction, so if these two are well and completely stopped, then the path of insight is completely purified. Since the stage of the previous obstacle is the path of application, there, excitement and regret are shown to obscure calm abiding, and dullness and sleep are shown to obscure insight. Here, the stage of complete purification is the ultimate path of application, so combine it in reverse from before. Blessed One, how many ways does a Bodhisattva who has entered calm abiding and insight completely search for the mind? This summarizes all the samadhis of calm abiding and insight, and the dharmas that interrupt those samadhis are mental distractions, so it is necessary to fully understand those and give instructions for abandoning them, so he asked that. The five kinds of loving-kindness, etc., show that a Bodhisattva who has truly entered the Great Vehicle must fully understand and abandon the distractions of the Hinayana mind, etc., which are the interruptions of the samadhi that is the basis of the wisdom that transcends the world and does not discriminate. Having the Mahayana mind means having the path and fruit of the Bodhisattva, contemplating the absence of self of phenomena.
