Because focusing on different parts becomes a fault, it is shown that these two are neither different nor the same. In this way, in order to prevent the nature of the path of calm abiding and insight, which is distinguished by the samadhi that abides in non-discriminating consciousness, from degenerating and being wasted, through teaching and explanation, the teaching of establishing the imputation of the samadhi that abides in non-discriminating consciousness is to establish the imputation in order to prevent the samadhi that abides in non-discriminating consciousness from being wasted. After that, in order to prevent the discrimination of non-discriminating consciousness from being wasted, the meaning of the words of establishing the imputation will be explained. The so-called discrimination of non-discriminating consciousness refers to the realization that the object of samadhi, the non-dual image, is not different from the nature of mind. Because it is non-dual, it cannot be divided into two, and non-discrimination is also the nature of the path, so it is also consciousness. By realizing that it is not different from the mind, this is called the discrimination of non-discriminating consciousness. The so-called establishing the imputation in order not to be wasted means that through the realization of non-discriminating consciousness, the nature of the path of calm abiding and insight is distinguished, and in order to prevent it from degenerating and being wasted, through teaching and explanation, the imputation of the realization of non-discriminating consciousness is established. So, how is the connection made? Here, the noble Maitreya thinks that other yogis would think like this: Is the image that is the object of samadhi of the yogi's realization of non-discriminating consciousness different or the same as that mind? If it is different, then it becomes the object and the subject, so how can the non-dual non-discriminating consciousness be realized? If it is the same, then how can it be imputed as mind and image? Considering the thoughts in the mind, the Blessed One, what is the image that is the object of samadhi that you observe, is it different from that mind? Or is it not different? In this way, the question was asked, and this is how the connection is made.

That which is called "to observe" is the yogi who possesses insight realizing the non-conceptual wisdom. That which is called "what is the image of the object of samadhi" is the object of samadhi of the mind of tranquility and insight, including both conceptual and non-conceptual images. That which is called "that mind" is the mind of tranquility and insight. That which is called "Maitreya, it is not other" is to prevent the teachings from being wasted, and it explains the establishment of certainty. That which is called "why is it not other" and so on, is to prevent the explanation from being wasted, and it explains the establishment of certainty. Among them, "because that image is merely consciousness" means that because that image is the very nature of the mind, it is not other than that mind. Realizing that it is not other in this way is realizing non-conceptual wisdom, this is explained. If one thinks, then how can mind and image be established? From there, it is said, "Consciousness is distinguished only by the object of consciousness, I have said." Because consciousness appears as the object of the image, mind and image can be established. That image which is inseparable from the nature of the mind, to recognize it in the way of self-awareness is the characteristic of consciousness, this is explained. If it is not other in this way, just as the eye cannot examine the eye itself, how can the mind examine the mind itself? For these reasons, Blessed One, if the image of the object of samadhi is not other than that mind, then how can that mind realize that mind itself? This was asked. To this, others think that the mind that does the observing is the agent, and the image that is observed is the object, how can it be said that these two are not other? Because in the world the agent and the object appear to be other. In order to truly explain that it is not other, Maitreya, one does not observe any dharma in any dharma.
