If there is no contradiction, then there is no contradiction. Teaching in this way is to gain an object of focus and to practice that object of focus. For a beginning yogi, the order of completely seeking an object of focus, gaining an object of focus, practicing an object of focus, and gaining the result, is only at the very beginning. When a yogi is seeking an object of focus, seeing, hearing, or completely examining any object of focus of a mind that is not in meditative equipoise, when grasping one, neither the seeking nor the image object of focus with conceptualization can be obtained, and the path of insight will not arise. After that, relying on hearing the holy Dharma, or holding it, or relying on the instructions of a virtuous friend, thereby manifesting the mental activity of the abiding in meditative equipoise on that very thing, in order to make that aspect appear in one's own mind, when mentally engaging in aspiration, one must first mentally engage in aspiration with the mind of the abiding in meditative equipoise, therefore, when seeking an object of focus, calm abiding is what precedes. After that, when mentally engaging in aspiration in that way, by the power of the mental activity of the abiding in meditative equipoise, when an aspect of knowable things that is similar to this appears in one's own mind, then one obtains the image object of focus with conceptualization, and the path of insight that is distinguished by the mental activity of the path of joining arises. After that, when single-pointedly entering meditative equipoise on that very object of focus with the aspect of calm abiding, then one is practicing the image object of focus without conceptualization, and the single-pointedness within the path of calm abiding that pacifies the distraction of signs, which is distinguished by the path of obtaining mental activity, arises. To the extent that the single-pointedness of mind within the path of calm abiding that pacifies the distraction of signs becomes vast, increases, and expands, to that extent, subsequently, the path of calm abiding that pacifies suffering, which is distinguished by the mental activity of the ultimate path, the arising of time and mind that are extremely tamed also becomes vast, increases, and expands. To the extent that these two dharmas become vast, increase, and expand, to that extent, the ultimate path of joining
