Engaging (focus) is done through applying the mind with concentration. Gathering and placing, placing nearby, taming, pacifying, and pacifying nearby are done through applying the mind by explaining and engaging at the appropriate times. Making it a single continuum is done through applying the mind without interruption. Making it samadhi is done through applying the mind without effort. Thus, these four applications of mind are the side of shamatha for the nine abidings of the mind. Having obtained shamatha of the inner mind, it is also the side of vipashyana for making great effort in vipashyana. Thus, the aspect of shamatha distinguished by the path of obtaining application of mind, summarized by the nine abidings of the mind, engaging with the four applications of mind possessing the six powers, that is called non-conceptual. The mind's image, self-aware, which is distinguished by the aspect of non-conceptual shamatha and is in accordance with the object of knowledge, is called an image. The phrase "in accordance with the object of knowledge" is as before. Previously, relying on the application of mind of the place of samadhi made by vipashyana together with conceptual thought, in order to make the aspect of the object of knowledge appear in one's own mind, either applying the mind with aspiration or applying the mind with suchness, thereby obtaining the object of the image together with conceptual thought. In particular, here, one does not aspire to that image with the aspect of vipashyana, but applies the mind to suchness with the aspect of shamatha, applying the mind to the nature of the mind, and single-mindedly engages in samadhi. The phrase "mind's image, self-aware" is also as before, that which is in accordance with the object of knowledge is not an external object of knowledge, but the aspect of the inner shamatha mind itself appears as the image, self-aware, therefore, that is called the non-conceptual image. Why is it called the non-conceptual image? Because the mind of the aspect of non-conceptual shamatha applies the mind to the suchness of the mind's image, self-aware.

Therefore, through attention, considering the nature of mind as mind, and abiding single-pointedly, since that non-discriminating state of calm abiding appears as the state of an image, therefore, that is called being distinguished by the state of calm abiding. The meaning of the word "image" is also as before, here, viewing as an image is the very state of non-discriminating calm abiding mind, viewing as an image is the self-awareness of the mind's image appearing in consciousness, obtaining the object of the non-discriminating image, and the arising of the path of calm abiding, their time of occurrence is also the same. Since the object of the non-discriminating mind of self-nature and oneness appears in consciousness, it is called an image. The calm abiding mind seen in this way is the state of calm abiding distinguished by the path of obtaining attention, encompassed by the nine mental abidings, entered by the four attentions possessing the six powers, and is the state of attention of the ultimate union path, therefore it is called non-discriminating. Furthermore, it does not discriminate that self-awareness of the mind's image with the state of insight, does not extremely discriminate, does not completely know, does not completely examine, but without abandoning the sign of the object, it only abides the mind inwardly with the state of calm abiding, truly abides, gathers and abides, closely abides, tames, pacifies, closely pacifies, becomes a single stream, becomes samadhi, therefore it is called non-discriminating. Those previously shown as names combined with discrimination, through negation, all names are similarly combined as appropriate, those are synonyms of the name non-discrimination. The synonyms of the name image are as before. In particular, the former is distinguished by insight, while this is distinguished by calm abiding, for those two, when the state of not yet obtaining the path of complete union of the division of insight and calm abiding has not yet been obtained, the former is obtaining what has not yet been obtained as an object.

Because it is increasing, it is said to be distinguished by insight (lHag mthong). This is because it makes the obtained object habitual, so it is said to be distinguished by calm abiding (zhi gnas). The so-called edge of things refers to the nature of the object and the place, the edge of things, the abiding transformation. The so-called thing refers to the object of insight and calm abiding, including the image with distinctions and the object of the image without distinctions, the Alaya consciousness. The so-called edge refers to the edge of its existence and such existence, the nature of abiding transformation. Why is the object itself called a thing? Because these two are the object of the object of calm abiding and insight and the place of the place. The so-called place of the object is because calm abiding and insight take the object of what is born as the object, so it is the faith and intention of the Samadhi ground, and the power of the intention of that nature, the image object with distinctions and without distinctions is obtained, from which calm abiding and insight arise, and calm abiding and insight also take the image object as the object, so the nature of the image object Alaya consciousness is the nature of the mind born of calm abiding and insight, called the object of the object. The so-called place of the place is because the Alaya consciousness is the place of the place of all dharmas born of mind and mind, so it is the faith and intention of the Samadhi ground, and the power of the intention of that nature, the image object with distinctions and without distinctions is obtained, this is the nature of the Alaya consciousness, and the calm abiding and insight born relying on that object are the Samadhi ground, the nature of Samadhi and wisdom born of mind, so the nature of the image object Alaya consciousness is calm abiding and insight, is the mind
