Because the mind with the aspect of Vipaśyanā, which includes concepts, appears as such an image-like aspect. Therefore, it is called distinguished by the aspect of Vipaśyanā. The word 'image,' for example, in relation to a form, the appearance of an image arises in dependence on the form. Although it is similar to the form and not entirely different from the form, it is called an image because it appears separate from the form. Similarly, viewing as a form is the mind itself with the aspect of Vipaśyanā, which includes concepts. Viewing as an image is the self-awareness of the mind's image appearing in the mind. That image arises in dependence on the mind with the aspect of Vipaśyanā, which includes concepts. It appears similar to what the mind desires, and the mind itself appears in that way, but it is not entirely different from the mind. The time of obtaining the object of the image with concepts and the arising of the path of Vipaśyanā is also the same. Although the essence is the same, it is called an image because it appears in the mind as if it were the object of the conceptual mind. It should be understood that what is said in other scriptures, the invisible and unobstructed form born from Samādhi, is also this. The Vipaśyanā mind that sees in this way is the aspect of Vipaśyanā distinguished by the application of the combining mind, gathered by the four conducts of wisdom, possessing the three doors, the basis is extremely differentiated, focusing on the six aspects. Moreover, this is still the stage of the mind engaging that individually recognizes characteristics, and arising from faith, and arising from extreme solitude, and gathering joy, and the mind engaging of discernment. It is not the stage of ultimate combination and the mind engaging of the fruit of ultimate combination. Therefore, it is called conceptual. Furthermore, because it accurately recognizes the self-awareness of the mind's image that corresponds to the object of knowledge, and can clearly distinguish merits and faults, it is also called conceptual with clear distinction. In addition, because it distinguishes the image as a difference of object from the nature of the discriminating essence,

It is also called 'with particular discrimination.' Furthermore, since it discriminates that image in various ways, it is also called 'with various discriminations.' Moreover, that image is essentially the nature of consciousness; since it discriminates the non-dual nature as dual and contradictory, it is also called 'with contradictory discrimination.' These are synonyms for 'with discrimination.' That image is also called 'image,' it is the sign of samadhi, the object of the realm of samadhi, the means of samadhi, the gateway of samadhi, the support of attention, the body of internal discrimination, and it is also called 'manifestation.' These are synonyms for that image. The so-called 'non-discriminating image' refers to the self-awareness of the mind's image that is distinguished by the aspect of tranquility and is in accordance with knowable objects. The 'non-discriminating' within it refers to the aspect of tranquility distinguished by the path of attaining attention, which is encompassed by the nine stages of abiding mind, possesses six powers, and enters through four types of attention. The 'image' refers to the self-awareness of the mind's image that is distinguished by the aspect of non-discriminating tranquility and is in accordance with knowable objects. Among these, the so-called 'aspect of tranquility distinguished by the path of attaining attention' refers to relying on the aspect-oriented attention that was previously established by discriminating vipassana with discrimination, in order to make the appearance of knowable objects manifest in one's own mind, through attention with aspiration or attention with reality. When the object of the discriminating image is attained, the aspect of tranquility is to focus one-pointedly on that image with attention to reality. What are the nine stages of abiding mind? They are: placing the mind, continuous placing, replacement, close placing, taming, pacifying, most pacifying, single-pointed concentration, and equanimity. So, how...

What, then, is settling? In order to prevent the mind from being distracted, it is settling that initially and correctly gathers it from all external objects and realizes it. How does one settle correctly? If the mind that is initially examined is agitated, coarse, unstable, and unsteadfast, then by means of binding it to the object of focus and by means of the initial way of acting, along with obvious censure, one makes it subtle and prevents it from being obviously distracted; this is settling correctly. How does one settle by gathering? In this way, one settles and correctly settles the mind; if it becomes distracted outward due to forgetfulness, then one gathers it back to that very thing; thus, one settles by gathering. How does one settle closely? Merely at the beginning, in this way, one places mindfulness nearby and abides, and one settles the mind correctly, so that in any case, one does not allow the mind to scatter outward; thus, one settles closely. How does one tame? If the mind becomes distracted by the characteristics of form, sound, smell, taste, and tactile objects, or by desire, hatred, and delusion, or by the characteristics of men and women, then one initially grasps these as perceptions of faults and, by virtue of that, one does not allow the mind to scatter to those characteristics; thus, one tames. How does one pacify? If the mind is completely disturbed by thoughts such as thoughts of desire, or by afflictions close by, such as longing for desire, then one initially grasps these as perceptions of faults and, by virtue of that, one does not allow the mind to scatter to those thoughts and afflictions close by; thus, one pacifies. How does one pacify closely? Because of forgetfulness, both those thoughts and afflictions close by will arise completely.
