Therefore, one searches in all aspects in this way. How does one search completely in terms of time? Regarding those objects, in the time encompassing the three times, it happened like this; in the future time, it will happen like this; in the present time, it exists like this now. Thus, one searches completely in terms of time. How does one search completely in terms of reasoning? Regarding that object, one searches completely with the four types of reasoning: dependent reasoning, functional reasoning, valid reasoning, and the nature of reality reasoning. Among them, with dependent reasoning, one searches completely for conventional truth from the perspective of conventional truth, ultimate truth from the perspective of ultimate truth, and the basis from the perspective of the basis. With functional reasoning, one searches completely for the functions of phenomena, saying, "This is a phenomenon," "This is a function," "This is the function of this." With valid reasoning, one searches completely with the three valid cognitions: reliable testimony, direct perception, and inference, asking, "Does this have reliable testimony or not?" "Is it perceived directly or not?" "Is it established by inference or not?" Thus, one searches completely. With the nature of reality reasoning, one has faith in the suchness of phenomena, the nature of manifest phenomena, the inconceivable nature, and the abiding nature, but does not contemplate or conceptualize. Thus, one searches completely with reasoning. So, why are the six types of detailed classifications of the basis established? Because it is spoken in terms of the three types of realization: realizing the meaning of what is said, realizing the limits of things, and realizing things as they are. Among them, by completely searching for the meaning, one realizes the meaning of what is said. By completely searching for things and completely searching for their own characteristics, one realizes the limits of things. By completely searching for general characteristics, completely searching for directions, completely searching for time, and completely searching for reasoning, one realizes things as they are. What the yogi should know is what is said.

The meaning of, and the very existence of all knowable objects, as well as their existence as they are, is limited to just that. Thus, the contemplation of the path of union, the aspect of higher vision that is thoroughly distinguished, gathered by the four practices of wisdom, endowed with the three doors, and focused on the six aspects of the basis of thorough distinction, is called conceptual. By this, all higher vision is perfectly gathered. The aspect of higher vision with concepts, the mental image of self-awareness that is compatible with the object called thorough distinction, is called an image. What is a knowable object? It is the object of purifying practice, the object of the wise, and the object of purifying afflictions, which were previously shown. Being compatible with that means that the yogi sees, hears, or fully examines any of those objects, or hears and holds the holy Dharma, or relies on the advice and subsequent instructions of a virtuous friend, manifests the mental activity of abiding in that very samadhi, and makes the appearance of that aspect in one's own mind for the sake of desire. When one thus makes the mental activity of desire, by the power of that mental activity of abiding in samadhi, whatever aspect similar to that knowable object appears in one's own mind, that is, it is not directly seeing that knowable object itself, but relying on that and making the mental activity of desire, the aspect compatible with that appears in the mind, so it is called compatible with the knowable object. The mental image of self-awareness means that the very thing that is compatible with the knowable object is not an external knowable object, but the very aspect of the inner higher vision mind appears as an image and awareness, so it is called an image with concepts. Why is it called an image with concepts? Because the mind of the aspect of higher vision with concepts makes the mental activity of desire in order to make the aspect of the knowable object appear in one's own mind, so it is called conceptual.
