Then, not accepting or abandoning whatever arises, in this way one achieves near pacification. How does one make it a single continuum? By means of manifest activity, without interruption, continuously placing the mind in the continuum of samadhi, in this way one makes it a single continuum. How does one make it samadhi? Through complete reliance and familiarity, through the cause of repeated practice, the spontaneous accomplishment of entering, and obtaining the path of spontaneous entering without manifest activity, through spontaneous accomplishment itself, that mind enters into the continuum of samadhi without distraction, in this way one makes it samadhi. What are the six powers? The power of hearing, the power of thinking, the power of mindfulness, the power of awareness, the power of diligence, and the power of complete familiarity. These six powers accomplish the nine stages of abiding of the mind. Among them, the power of hearing and the power of thinking, temporarily based on whatever is heard and whatever is thought, first only place the mind on the object of focus, and then accurately place it in a bound manner. The power of mindfulness is to accurately gather the mind from that which has been focused on, and to abide and closely abide by gathering it without distraction. The power of wisdom is to tame and pacify from then on by not scattering to the aspects of conceptualization and near afflictions. The power of diligence is not to accept both of those, and to continuously place the mind in the continuum of samadhi, thereby achieving near pacification and becoming a single continuum. The power of complete familiarity is to make it samadhi. What are the four mental engagements? The mental engagement of entering with effort, the mental engagement of entering with interruption, the mental engagement of entering without interruption, and the mental engagement of entering without effort. These nine stages of abiding of the mind are entered through these four mental engagements. Among them, abiding and accurately abiding
