The term "image" refers to the object of knowledge that is completely distinguished by the aspect of higher vision (vipassanā), and the self-awareness of the mind's image that corresponds to it. The term "with conceptualization" refers to the aspect of higher vision that is completely distinguished by the application of the path of union, which is encompassed by the four activities of wisdom, possessing the three doors, and focusing on the sixfold division of the four. The term "image" refers to the self-awareness of the mind's image that is completely distinguished by that aspect of higher vision with conceptualization and corresponds to the object of knowledge. The term "the aspect of higher vision completely distinguished by the application of the path of union" refers to the aspect of higher vision of faith and aspiration, because the aspect of the object of knowledge appears in one's own mind in reliance on the application of the meditative state. What are the four activities of wisdom? They are discrimination, complete discrimination, thorough conceptualization, and thorough examination. What is discrimination? It is the wisdom that discriminates by the amount that exists in the objects to be cultivated, the objects of the wise, and the objects for purifying afflictions. What is complete discrimination? It is the wisdom that completely discriminates the way things exist as they are in those objects. What is thorough conceptualization? It is when the application of mind that possesses that wisdom, with conceptualization, grasps at characteristics, then it is thorough conceptualization. What is thorough examination? It is when the application of mind that possesses those two wisdoms, with conceptualization, thoroughly understands it, then it is thorough examination. Among these, the first is understanding, and the remaining three are to be understood as showing the distinctions of that understanding itself. What are the three doors of higher vision? They are following only by characteristics, following by complete collection, and following by individual investigation from thorough searching. What is following only by characteristics? It is when one hears and grasps the sacred Dharma, or

The mental application that abides in the precepts and subsequent teachings of a virtuous friend is to apply the mind but not to think, not to discriminate, not to measure, and not to closely examine. At that time, one is merely following after the sign. What is following after thorough searching? It is when one hears and grasps the holy Dharma, or relies on the precepts and subsequent teachings of a virtuous friend, and with a mental application of abiding, one applies the mind, thinks, discriminates, measures, and closely examines. At that time, one is following after thorough searching. What is following after thorough searching with individual discrimination? It is when one thinks, investigates, measures, and closely examines, and then individually discriminates according to how it is established. At that time, one is following after individual discrimination that comes from thorough searching. So, what are the six bases of insight meditation that are objects of differentiation? When one thoroughly searches by making them objects, one thoroughly searches the six kinds of bases, namely, meaning, things, characteristics, directions, times, and reasons, and after thoroughly searching, one also individually discriminates them. So, how does one thoroughly search for meaning? Regarding the objects of taming behavior, the wise, and afflictive behavior, one says, "Its meaning is this," and in this way, one thoroughly searches for meaning. How does one thoroughly search for things? Regarding those objects themselves, one thoroughly searches for two kinds of things, namely, internal things and external things, and in this way, one thoroughly searches for things. How does one thoroughly search for characteristics? Regarding those objects themselves, one thoroughly searches for two kinds of characteristics, namely, self-characteristics and general characteristics, and in this way, one thoroughly searches for characteristics. How does one thoroughly search for directions? Regarding those objects themselves, there are two kinds of directions, namely, the dark side and the white side, which one thoroughly searches. The dark side is from the perspective of faults and shortcomings, and the white side is from the perspective of virtues and benefits.
