Therefore, one should apply oneself to the profound teachings exactly as they are, without fully understanding them. The phrase "also believes in this Dharma" indicates the distinction of belief arising from having belief. Because one has belief, there is a basis for engaging in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, and therefore, as before, one will believe in this Dharma. Because belief is not perfect, the basis for engaging in the conduct of a Bodhisattva is not perfect, and therefore, as before, one will not attain realization. One should apply the distinction of belief obtained through faith in the Dharma. The phrase "all these Dharmas are only without inherent existence," and so on, indicates the distinction of belief arising from small wisdom. That small wisdom is not obtained through the gradual accomplishment of the accumulations of merit and wisdom, their causes and results. It is not straightforward or of a straightforward nature, but merely wisdom through the ability to discriminate and eliminate. Therefore, the distinction of belief arising from that small wisdom also only appears to cling to the literal meaning in terms of meaning, thereby denigrating all characteristics of actions, and making them completely equal through the equality of not having obtained wisdom and virtuous Dharmas. As previously stated, being separated from wisdom does not mean that it will be wasted because wisdom has not fully matured, but one should recognize that this small wisdom will be wasted for a while. Among them, all these Dharmas are only without inherent existence. The phrase "appearing to cling to the literal meaning in the meaning of Dharma" means that when it is said that all Dharmas are without inherent existence, it is not that all characteristics are without inherent existence in themselves. If it were like the way of expressing the Sutras of straightforward meaning as before, if one does not understand it in this way, and all characteristics are without inherent existence, then one only appears to cling to the literal meaning in the meaning of Dharma. The phrase "all these Dharmas are only unborn," and so on, does not appear to cling to the literal meaning in the meaning of Dharma. The phrase "observing all Dharmas as non-existent" refers to Dharmas without characteristics, as well as Dharmas with the characteristics of complete defilement, and the characteristics of complete purification.

All conditioned dharmas should be viewed as lacking inherent existence. To view as lacking characteristics means to view all imputed characteristics, dependent characteristics, and thoroughly established characteristics as lacking inherent existence. If dependent characteristics and thoroughly established characteristics exist, then imputed characteristics can also be fully understood. This statement means that the very act of naming and labeling those two characteristics as inherent or distinct is the imputed characteristic. Therefore, those are actually slandering all three characteristics, which indicates the distinction of faith arising from small wisdom. Those who perceive my teachings as teachings are those who hold them to be the words of the Buddha, which indicates the distinction of faith arising from lineage and faith. To perceive what is not meaningful as meaningful means to adhere only to the literal meaning of the Dharma, which indicates the distinction of faith arising from small wisdom, which is to slander all three characteristics. Those who increase virtuous dharmas through faith in the Dharma shows the benefit of the distinction of faith arising from lineage and faith. They are endowed with the lineage of realizing the Thus-Gone One's vehicle, and before that, at the time of first generating the mind of enlightenment, they have faith in the eight objects of faith and believe that they can attain the Buddha's teachings, so they are endowed with a pure realm of faith. Because they have already generated the roots of virtue that are in accordance with liberation, before long they will also generate the roots of virtue that are in accordance with definite discernment, and gradually attain the path of seeing, the path of meditation, and even the ultimate result. Therefore, it is called increasing virtuous dharmas, which means showing that it is endowed with immeasurable benefits. However, if one clings to what is not meaningful, wisdom will be completely lost, etc., which are the faults of faith arising from small wisdom.
