Having accumulated merits for hundreds of eons, one still may not attain what corresponds to the decisive part, nor attain the stage of learning. Instead, one may accidentally attain the fruit of self-awakening in the state of no-more-learning. This refers to the roots of virtue in the worldly stage that correspond to the part of liberation, and the existence of the stage of no-more-learning. The worldly stage corresponds to the decisive part, while the stage of learning does not exist. Among these, the first two will become practitioners in the assembly of Pratyekabuddhas. The last will become like a rhinoceros, solitary. From these (dispositions), the complete transformation into Bodhi, and the designation as the solitary path of peace, and how these two paths manifest complete and perfect enlightenment, should be understood as being similar to the Shravakas. Thus, the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and the Tathagatas (Tathāgata: Sanskrit, तथागत, Tathāgata, Thus Gone; Tibetan: དེ་བཞིན་གཤེགས་པ།), the three lineages of manifest realization, are merely transformed by the power of the causes of their respective vehicles, which are the causes of complete Nirvana. Among sentient beings, there is no division into such definite categories. It should be understood that the nature of these (lineages) is not fixed as one. Thus, the five lineages spoken of in the Sutras also have the same nature of inherent lineage for all beings. It is only from the differences in the lineages of complete practice that they are temporarily divided into five aspects. It should be known that they are not permanently fixed. These are general explanations of the classification of lineages. Here, the term "possessing the basis of lineage" should be understood as referring only to those individuals who realize the lineage of the Shravaka vehicle, who are solitary practitioners of the path of peace. Having explained the general meaning, now we will explain the meaning of these words. The term "solitary path of peace," where "peace" means liberation from the obscurations of afflictions. "Path" refers to the path and the fruit, that is, the path of the Shravaka vehicle and the fruit of liberation. "Solitary one" refers to the state when one has not yet attained the cause of complete transformation into unsurpassed Bodhi, that is, the lineage of complete practice, and merely abides in the liberation and Nirvana of the Shravakas.

Even if one possesses diligence and abides in the heart of enlightenment, one will not be able to attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. This is because at that time, one does not possess the lineage that has properly cultivated the causes for completely transforming into unsurpassed enlightenment. For example, just as polishing agate will not turn it into a wish-fulfilling jewel, even if all the Buddhas urge one, one will not have the fortune to manifest and attain unsurpassed enlightenment. This refers to that situation, but it is not always the case. Whenever one can obtain the lineage that has properly cultivated the causes for completely transforming into unsurpassed enlightenment, and as stated in the previous section on lineage, one will definitely manifest and perfectly attain unsurpassed enlightenment. Because the nature of having attained transformation, thoroughly distinguished by the transcendental path, ensures that one will not fall back into lower realms, and one will definitely attain the ultimate fruit of unsurpassed enlightenment. The analogy of "like agate" at that time does not mean that the nature of one's transformed mind is like agate and cannot be changed. Rather, it refers to the intention, realm of faith, and habitual tendencies gathered by the Hearer Vehicle, which are like agate and are not the cause of unsurpassed enlightenment. Because the Hearer Vehicle itself is not the direct cause of unsurpassed enlightenment, different causes do not produce different results. This is its definition. To show that meaning, it is said, "Why is that?" and so on. The so-called "because the nature is only of inferior lineage" refers to the sudden lineage that has properly cultivated the causes of the Hearer Vehicle. Because it does not have the cause of unsurpassed enlightenment, it is said to be of inferior nature. But for the nature of the transformation of his alaya consciousness, it is not necessarily of inferior nature, because the seed of unsurpassed enlightenment is also there. The so-called "becoming very disinclined to do the benefit of sentient beings" means not making sentient beings fully mature.
