What are the four discordant near afflictions? In the past, being careless and having strong afflictions, and prolonged afflictions, this is the first near affliction. Being foolish and unwise, relying on evil friends, this is the second near affliction. Being strongly suppressed by lamas, lords, kings, thieves, heretics, etc., being powerless and having a confused mind, this is the third near affliction. Lacking resources and being concerned about livelihood, this is the fourth near affliction. Because one is not separated from these four near afflictions, it is called that the obscurations are not completely purified. The immaturity of the continuum is indicated by the term "immaturity of the continuum." That is to say, when a Bodhisattva is in the state of truly establishing the lineage, he abides in the lineage, and even though the obscurations have been completely purified, he is not separated from those continua that cannot attain the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment due to four causes. What are the four? Here, from the very beginning, the Bodhisattva does not encounter a virtuous friend, or a Buddha, or a Bodhisattva, or one who teaches the path to enlightenment without error, this is the first cause. Furthermore, even though the Bodhisattva has encountered a virtuous friend, he holds and learns the Bodhisattva's trainings in a reversed manner, this is the second cause. Furthermore, even though the Bodhisattva has encountered a virtuous friend, and does not learn the Bodhisattva's trainings in a reversed manner, he is negligent and lazy in those practices, and is mostly not constantly diligent, this is the third cause. Furthermore, even though the Bodhisattva has encountered a virtuous friend, and also learns the Bodhisattva's trainings without error, and has initiated diligence in those practices, he has not prevented the factors of enlightenment from being submerged in decline for a long time, therefore the faculties are not fully matured and the accumulations for enlightenment are not fully perfected, this is the fourth cause. Because one is not separated from these four causes, it is called the immaturity of the continuum. Not generating the mind means that faith and understanding do not increase.
