Having perfected the sphere of infinite consciousness, he dwells in it. He thinks to himself: 'Perceiving in space will turn into consciousness.' Thinking thus, he thinks to himself: 'All this is just consciousness. That infinite consciousness is neither existent nor non-existent.' Thus he enters into concentration, and he has forbearance towards the Dharma of non-arising, but it is not fully accomplished. In every way, he completely transcends the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking that there is nothing at all, and thus perfects the sphere of nothingness and dwells in it. In the term 'nothingness,' the 'thing' refers to desire, hatred, delusion, as well as conceptualization and various discriminations, complete discriminations, all conditioned dharmas, and those that arise from untrue pervasive conceptualizations are called 'thing.' 'Nothingness' means becoming smaller than those things just mentioned, becoming more subtle, is called 'nothingness.' The Bodhisattva who dwells in that, the forbearance towards the Dharma of non-arising is extremely blazing and extremely clear. Because of that cause, that condition, that basis, and because of obtaining that, he does not cling to the sphere of nothingness, but seeks further. He seeks further, thinking to himself: 'This (sphere of nothingness) is where the subtle aspects of perceptions are completely examined as nothing at all, that is neither the state of neither perception nor non-perception.' The non-perception in it is because of emptiness. The non-non-perception is because of dependent origination. He manifests the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, and in every way, he completely transcends the sphere of nothingness, perfects the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, and dwells in it. Dwelling in that, he thinks to himself: 'What is there to enjoy in this state of neither perception nor non-perception?' Thus, his wisdom transcends it. After his wisdom transcends it, he manifests the Dharma of non-arising and non-cessation. He sees all dharmas as unborn and unceasing. He sees all dharmas as naturally pacified, therefore neither decaying nor permanent. Therefore, the forbearance towards the Dharma of non-arising is completely pure. He

Above that, spontaneously accomplished, entering without interruption. These are the nine samadhis in which Bodhisattvas ultimately abide. In the Vimalakirti Sutra, the Licchavi youth Ratnakara asked the Buddha how to purify the Buddha-field, and after explaining that the paramitas, the ten virtues, the mind of enlightenment, etc., are the Buddha-field, (the Buddha said) Son of good family, therefore, if you want to purify the Buddha-field, the Bodhisattva should purify his own mind. Why is that? Because to the extent that the Bodhisattva's mind is pure, to that extent the Buddha-field will be pure. Then, by the power of the Buddha, the venerable Shariputra thought to himself: How can the Buddha-field be completely purified, just as all of one's sentient beings are completely purified? When the Blessed One Shakyamuni was practicing the Bodhisattva conduct, was his mind completely pure? Why does the Buddha-field appear to be so impure? Then, the Blessed One, knowing Shariputra's thoughts, said: Shariputra, what do you think? Why can't the blind see the sun and the moon? It is the fault of the blind, not the fault of the sun and the moon. Shariputra, likewise, sentient beings without merit, obscured by the eye of ignorance, do not see the qualities and adornments of the Buddha-field, this is not the fault of the Tathagata. Shariputra, the Buddha-field of the Tathagata is completely pure, but you have not seen it. Then, Brahma Sikhin said to Shariputra: Do not say that the Buddha-field is impure. The Buddha-field is completely pure. Shariputra, just as the palace of the Paranirmitavasavartin gods is adorned, we also see that the Buddha-field of the Blessed One Shakyamuni Buddha is adorned with qualities. Then, Shariputra said to Brahma Sikhin: Brahma, I see this great earth as uneven, with thorns, cliffs, ravines, mountain peaks, steep gorges, unclean things, and full of corpses everywhere. Brahma!
