Moreover, it is neither born nor ceases, neither apparent nor hidden, yet, focusing on the image of the Tathagata's body, one performs meritorious deeds and dedicates them completely. Like the image of Indra, unmoving, unthinking, ungrasping, the Tathagata is also unborn and unthinking, yet like an image, the world appears, showing the differences in the order of greatness due to the differences in the perceptions of sentient beings. By cultivating the power of complete maturation and faith, one becomes able to hear the Dharma, and according to one's thoughts, one can also attain wisdom and liberation in the three vehicles. For newly initiated Bodhisattvas and other ordinary beings who are disciplined by Nirvana, due to their past maturation, they become invisible like an image, and they think that the Tathagata has passed into Nirvana. Just as the sun's disc appears in order according to the height and depth of the earth, so too does the Tathagata's disc of wisdom gradually appear from Bodhisattvas down to even those who have fallen into wrong views. In short, all thoughts of negativity are the cause of affliction. All thoughts of virtue are the cause of purification. The questioner: The Tathagata has attained rootless and baseless enlightenment. Manjushri asked: What are the root and the basis? The root is the aggregates. The basis is the unrealistically imputed. That which is inexpressible is the meaning of dependent origination. That which is the meaning of dependent origination is the meaning of Dharma. That which is the meaning of Dharma is the meaning of Buddha. Therefore, whoever sees dependent origination sees the Dharma. Whoever sees the Dharma sees the Buddha, seeing as if one sees nothing when searching. Manjushri, what is meant by "nothing"? It is like this: mind and object. Then, when mind and object are not seen, that is when reality is seen. Thus, the Tathagata has perfectly awakened to those dharmas equally through equality. The Tathagata, with uncontaminated virtuous dharmas, is like an image; in this, there is no Tathagata, nor is there suchness.

All that appears in the world is merely an image. From the Dharma that has been truly compiled, it is known that among the nine successive absorptions in which Bodhisattvas ultimately abide, one dwells having perfected the first dhyana, which is separated from desires, separated from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, accompanied by vitarka and vicara, and possessing joy and bliss born of separation. Among these, desires are the opposing factors of the first dhyana, that is, separated from those cravings. Sinful and unwholesome dharmas are attachment, hatred, and ignorance, from which the ten unwholesome actions arise. This is called sinful and unwholesome dharmas, and being separated from these is the first dhyana. Being together with vitarka is being accompanied by vitarka. What are those vitarkas? They are the vitarkas that are in accordance with the first dhyana. One thinks according to the ritual, and since those are also tamed, those are called vitarka: knowing and comprehending, examining and thoroughly thinking, and entering into samadhi are vitarka. What is vicara? It is examining those same vitarkas that are in accordance with the first dhyana, as well as discriminating examination, proximate examination, completely enjoying, entering into samadhi, and the mind following after, which is called vicara. Being together with those is being accompanied by vitarka, being accompanied by vicara is the first dhyana. Joy and bliss are born of separation, therefore it is called joy and bliss born of separation. Abiding having perfected, among these, having perfected means guarding, as well as the act of guarding, concealing, as well as the act of concealing, tasting and manifesting joy. The Bodhisattva abiding in that dhyana obtains the desire and aspiration to comprehend forbearance towards the unborn Dharma, but the aspiration and desire do not perceive the essence in the first dhyana. He begins to practice the second dhyana, he pacifies those vitarka and vicara of the first dhyana. From those, he makes the mind thoroughly pacified, seeking the cause for completely accomplishing the second dhyana. He is separated from vitarka and vicara, the inner being is completely clear, the stream of mind becomes one, vitarka and vicara cease.
