So! What is eye consciousness? It is form. Because the inner eye consciousness is present, forms are seen in dreams, but not with the physical eye. Compared to these two who have truly accumulated roots of virtue for tens of thousands of years from the wheel of non-retrogression, it is said that one morning there is much more merit. From the Jewel Cloud Sutra: The fearlessness of Bodhisattvas is not meaningless. Why is that? Because they have attained the nature of Dharma. Sons of lineage, for those who have not attained the nature of Dharma, their fearlessness will become meaningless, but not for those who have attained the nature of Dharma. The fearlessness of Bodhisattvas is not separate from words and letters. Why is that? Because they have no fear of all treatises. Sons of lineage, those who know only some aspects of the treatises, their fearlessness will become separate from words and letters, but not for those who are without ignorance of all treatises. Bodhisattvas do not dwell in places where many Buddhas' manifestations become fruitless, the benefit of sentient beings diminishes, and they are not born in long-life heavens. Bodhisattvas are born in the realm of desire itself, where sentient beings are to be tamed, and where the manifestations of Buddhas can be pleased. Why is that? Because it is skillful means. Sons of lineage, this is the taming of Bodhisattvas. From the Brahma Visesacinta Sutra: In this Buddha-field, some abide in pure conduct for hundreds of thousands of kalpas, but in the Sahā world, one who abides without anger for a single morning has extremely great merit. Possessing four qualities, a Bodhisattva

Observe the distinctions of the vehicles. Things are empty by the nature of the eye. Whoever does not meditate on all dharmas, this is meditating on the path. When the eon is burned, springs, ponds, and lakes, etc., dry up first, and later the great ocean also dries up. Likewise, when the sacred Dharma declines, the Dharma of sentient beings who engage in temporary conduct will decline first. Later, from the hands of those noble individuals who are like an ocean of wisdom and who correctly uphold the Buddha's vehicle, the sacred Dharma will also decline. Just as what arises from the ocean, jewels gather with jewels. Thus it is praised, even if a burning eon occurs, it will not be burned. That is, when the world is destroyed, it goes elsewhere. Similarly, when the stainless Dharma is destroyed, those with supreme diligence strive and hold on. Realizing the world is not a vessel and desire is not Dharma, the Khampa (Tibetan place name) Victorious One goes to another place. From teaching that all dharmas are unborn, one does not become victorious in just one instance. It is attained through the order of reason and the order of action. In countless millions of eons, it is obtained by donning armor, not otherwise. Son of lineage, one who desires to protect oneself should not examine the conduct of anyone else. Do not judge, saying, 'This is like this,' 'This is like that.' Hearing this Dharma and being reborn as a human, even a householder attached to the five desirable qualities is excellent. Having renounced in this teaching, one does not boast of the qualities of having trained in objects of focus and views. In the Question of the Noble Akashagarbha, it says, 'The root of virtue is the first arising of the mind of enlightenment, it is the root of all the Buddha's teachings.' Merit is that as soon as the mind of enlightenment arises, it overwhelms the merit of sentient beings and inferior vehicles. Wisdom is the dedication of those roots of virtue to the unsurpassed. With the wisdom of prajna, one completely abandons all the afflictions of all sentient beings. With the wisdom of skillful means, one does not abandon all sentient beings. Because speech is like space, one does not retaliate even when scolded. Because the body is like space, one does not retaliate even when struck. Because the mind is like space, one does not retaliate even when reproached. Because thought is like space, one does not retaliate even when angered. The root of virtue is an excellent spiritual friend.
