With the body upright and relaxed, sit in the lotus position, keeping mindfulness present, and with a mind that does not wander outward, think thus: "Whatever sentient beings are full of anger and harmful intent, who engage in unwholesome actions, and whoever opposes me, whose enemies increase without end, whether they have already appeared, are appearing, or will appear in the future, I shall completely pacify all their anger and harmful intent, and establish them in the essence of enlightenment." And not just thinking about it a little, but thinking from the depths of one's heart. In this way, the bodhisattva will cultivate loving-kindness more and more. World Honored One, isn't it after countless three great asamkhyeya kalpas that the Tathagatas are perfectly accomplished? The World Honored One replied: "No, it is not. Why? Because the realm of the Tathagatas, the deeds to be accomplished, are inconceivable, so it cannot be perfectly accomplished in countless three great asamkhyeya kalpas. Rather, it is from the time when the bodhisattva enters the equality of dharmas that kalpas can be counted. It is not counted from the time of the initial aspiration." The Mahayana Abhidharma Sutra states that when a bodhisattva possesses four qualities, he will effortlessly comprehend the meaning of all consciousnesses, that is, knowing the causes and conditions of different consciousnesses. For example, ghosts, animals, humans, and gods have different consciousnesses regarding the same object. Also, the object of consciousness without an object, such as the past, future, dreams, and images. Knowing the non-inverted consciousness, that is, knowing without confusion, because the consciousness that focuses on the true meaning can be known as it is without effort, so it will not be inverted. The third type of consciousness is the conforming consciousness, for example, bodhisattvas and meditators who have attained mastery over their minds, due to the power of faith and understanding, things will appear as they are; yogis who have attained tranquility and are diligent in dharma and insight, things will appear merely through attention; those who have attained non-conceptual wisdom and abide in it, all things do not

Thus it appears. The Explanation of the Definitive Meaning Sutra states: "Manjushri, this is what the Tathagata has done, and it has been shown in the definitive meaning." "World Honored One, what is the image of the object of contemplation in the Samadhi of Correct Contemplation? Maitreya, should it be said to be different from the mind, or should it be said to be not different?" Maitreya, it should be said to be not different. Why is it not different? Because that image is merely consciousness. Maitreya, consciousness is not distinguished merely by the object of consciousness, as I have said. "World Honored One, if the image of the object of contemplation in Samadhi is not different from the mind, then how does that mind contemplate that mind?" The Buddha said: "Maitreya, it does not contemplate any dharma, but the mind that arises in that way appears in that way." Maitreya, for example, in a very pure mirror mandala, the image is seen because of the cause of form, but one thinks that one sees the image. In that case, the appearance of that form and the image appear to be different in meaning. Similarly, the mind that arises in that way also appears to be different in meaning from what is called the image of Samadhi. "World Honored One, what are the forms, etc., of the images of sentient beings that abide in their own nature?" Maitreya, should it be said to be not different from the mind? Maitreya, it is not different, but children with inverted minds do not know the mere consciousness of those images as it is, so they think perversely. The Eight Thousand Verse Perfection of Wisdom Sutra states: The Buddha said to Maitreya, "In the objects of the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, such as what is called form, up to what is called the dharmas of the Buddhas, are these not merely conceptualizations that are temporarily designated in names?" The answer was: "They are merely conceptualizations." The Ornament of the Wordless Treasure Casket Sutra states: "Son of good family, what is the one dharma that Bodhisattvas should always protect? It is: Do not do to others what you do not want for yourself. If you protect this one dharma, then all the trainings of a Bodhisattva will be protected. Why? Son of good family,
