There is never a time when the Buddhas do not reside. Whenever the Buddhas do not reside, there will be no falling away from the Dharma in the interim. From the abiding in mindfulness of the sacred Dharma, if one gives only a little thought without giving it away, one will be reborn as a hungry ghost. If one does not give from one's vows, sentient beings will go to hell. From the Pratimoksha of the Bodhisattva, whatever is given is praised by the Buddhas. Whatever is abandoned is praised by children. The son of the non-greedy asked: One should not burn any object for which the mind does not arise to give, and into which the mind does not enter. One should not take hold of any clinging for which the mind does not arise to abandon it. The Powerful One asked: From whom did the Bodhisattva, who receives teachings and cultivates giving, ethics, patience, diligence, and meditation by reciting them, or who possesses the accumulations of the Bodhisattva's path, hear or receive the four-line verse? If one were to offer unwavering gains and all reverence to the teacher who taught those names, words, and letters, for as many eons as there are verses taught, one could not repay the kindness. What need is there to speak of looking with non-Dharmic reverence? From the White Lotus Sutra of the Sacred Dharma: The conduct and realm of practice should be protected, and kept free from bustle and pure. Kings and princes, intimacy should always be abandoned. Whoever is a royal attendant, as well as outcastes and inferior castes, heretics and those people, should be abandoned in every way. One should not rely on monks who are disciplined and abide in the scriptures, or those who are arrogant, thinking themselves to be Arhats. One should always abandon those who engage in laughing and talking, the nuns. One should also abandon the laymen with instability and pride. It arises from the thought of protecting the Sangha. When it was the turn of a novice monk who was an Arhat to guard the Sangha. From the Akashagarbha Sutra: For the four kings, stupas, the Sangha, and the seizure of the Sangha of the four directions, and the abandonment and obstruction of the Dharma, and any ordained person, beating, abusing, killing, binding, and so on.

Taking away the monastic robes and making them stay at home, and doing any of the five heinous crimes, and engaging in adultery in the next world, taking up the ten non-virtuous actions and causing many others to take them up. From the Essence of the Earth: For the sake of evil, whether one has gone forth and is disciplined or is immoral, even a wheel-turning king, if he is in accordance with the Dharma, is not allowed to be executed by punishment, what need is there to mention if he is not in accordance with the Dharma? From the Encouragement of Higher Thought: Maitreya, those who do not strive, and do not seek meditation, renunciation, recitation, and extensive learning, they are not those who have gone forth in the teachings of the Thus-Gone One. Why is that? The teachings of the Thus-Gone One are distinguished by meditation and so on, but not distinguished by idle talk and the edge of work like this. Maitreya, even if a Bodhisattva who is diligent in idle talk fills the three thousand great thousand worlds with stupas of seven precious things, he will not make me happy, respectful, and esteemed. From the Holy Dharma of Mindfulness: Doing leftovers in secret, that is, if one does not eat the leftovers and gives them to me, one will be born as a hungry ghost. From the Sutra of Manjushri's Play: Anger is called anger, because it destroys the roots of virtue accumulated for hundreds of kalpas, therefore it is called anger. From the Inexhaustible Intelligence: The roots of virtue that are completely dedicated to Bodhi will not be exhausted in the intermediate state until they abide in the heart of Bodhi. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, for example, a drop of water falling into the great ocean will not be exhausted in the intermediate state until the end of the kalpa. From the Questions of Ananda: Ananda, if a Bodhisattva who has entered the Great Vehicle has as many downfalls of attachment as there are sands in the Ganges River, and one downfall of hatred arises, if the Bodhisattva's vehicle is to be measured, then the downfall of hatred is very heavy. Why is that? Hatred will abandon all sentient beings, and attachment will gather sentient beings. Ananda, which affliction will gather sentient beings?
