In the chapter on the Three Roots, it says: Son of the gods, the three realms are only mind, and this mind is like an illusion. Even if you search everywhere for the nature of the mind, you will not find it. The mind with which you search everywhere, that mind also cannot be found. Since sentient beings are not observable, all phenomena are not observable. A Bodhisattva who is skilled in means strives to pacify the suffering of others as much as he himself suffers and is uncomfortable. If one possesses four qualities, one will also practice the profound Dharma, but one will not directly realize the true limit. The four are: abiding in the essence of steadfast commitment, unwavering diligence, great compassion, and skillful means. Maudgalyayana, if you think that I only attain perfect enlightenment in this great continent, and not in other continents, do not view it that way. Why? Because in all four great continents, I teach the Dharma according to the inclinations of sentient beings. In one place I attain perfect enlightenment, in one place I dwell in the womb of a mother, in one place I dwell in the Tushita heaven, and in one place I pass into complete nirvana. I truly know all of these. Thus, here, there is no establishment of the four fruits of the ascetic path, such as saying 'stream-enterer' and so on. However, all of them sit on one cushion, directly realize through some supernormal powers, attain the eight liberations, gain great wisdom, rise into the sky, burn their own bodies with fire, and pass into complete nirvana. Maudgalyayana, a Bodhisattva who possesses four qualities will temporarily take five birth-places. The four are: making a living by the name of a Bodhisattva, not studying the precepts of a Bodhisattva, being indifferent to those who abandon the Dharma and not preventing them, obstructing the gains of others and speaking unpraiseworthy words, and not guarding the actions of body, speech, and mind. In the teaching of the three vows, it says: Those who have remorse in their hearts will not commit the five heinous crimes and the ten non-virtuous actions. They will not hold or fight over the hand of a rotting corpse.

Having entered into the mind of loving-kindness, one completely abandons twenty places. One does not teach the Dharma to a woman who is not yet twenty years old. One does not answer a question asked by a Bhikshuni. One does not write a woman's letters. One does not go to a feast invited by a prostitute. One does not ask again for what a Bhikshuni has asked for. One does not wear Dharma robes given by a Bhikshuni. If a widow invites, one does not accept without the Sangha. If a Bhikshuni invites, one should cross one's hands, lower one's head, and avoid that direction. In a place where the Dharma is taught, if a Bhikshuni comes, one should cover one's face with one's hands and sit down. Two Dharmas should be universally taught. Which two? One should seek the Dharma-nature of the non-substantiality of all Dharmas, and one should not generate a mind of seeking. How does one seek? Just as those two, when sought, are not found. One should not generate a mind of non-finding with non-finding, because that is a wrong view, it is the mind of the three realms. A person not eating zanba for six days is the best. Having renounced in this teaching, from self and sentient beings to the view of Nirvana, using faith to give and receive is not like that. In the future, greedy Bhikshus, slanderers, rude people, coarse people, those with angry faces, abiding in the three Dharmas, will appear as doctors, merchants, and those similar to women. For example, if bile is applied to the nose of an angry dog, it will become angry again. Similarly, in the future, non-noble beings, like dogs and foxes, will appear. After they obtain the profound Sutras and Vinaya of the Tathagata, they will become angry again. Sentient beings who possess four Dharmas will not become weary no matter what Sutras they hear. The four are: being unmindful, not believing in karmic results, not believing in the great hells, and not believing that one will die. Furthermore, there are four that will not cause weariness: being young and without obstacles, possessing power and strength, being attached to the qualities of desire, and not having experienced yoga and becoming possessors of the power of suffering. The Dharma practiced by Shramanas and Brahmins is one: the mind does not abide in any Dharma. The so-called one-pointedness of mind, if sought, there is not even one Dharma.
