Was it with impure wisdom that he, having become the king of birds, gave his flesh to the hawk for the sake of the pigeon? Answer: No, it was not. When I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva, did I suppress it with the roots of virtue endowed with the six perfections? Answer: No, it was not. If those foolish people say that enlightenment is only the aspect of emptiness, then their conduct is not completely pure. In the Sutra of the Heap of Jewels, it says: Four things will cause the roots of virtue born of Bodhisattvas to be exhausted: seeking the secret words of the world with arrogance, attachment to hearing and reverence, viewing with the eyes of a householder, angering and slandering Bodhisattvas, and abandoning Sutras that have not been grasped or heard. In the Vinaya of the Sarvastivadins, it is said: The Blessed One said: Bhikshu, look at this Bhikshu prostrating to the stupa and rejoicing in his heart. Venerable One, so it is. Bhikshu, as much sand as there is in the eight hundred forty thousand yojanas of ground that this Bhikshu has stepped on, so many thousands of times will he enjoy the kingdom of a Chakravartin. The venerable Nera-vartin asked: Where will such a great root of virtue be completely exhausted? The Blessed One said: By practicing Brahmacharya. I have not seen such a thing as a Brahmacharin being wounded or harmed, and such great roots of virtue will be completely exhausted there. Therefore, even in the face of opposition, do not harm with the mind, let alone the body with the mind. In the Sutra of the Medicine Buddha Bhaisajyaguru, it says: If someone violates the four hundred precepts of a Bodhisattva, the two hundred and fifty precepts of a Bhikshu, and the five hundred precepts of a Bhikshuni, if they fear falling into the lower realms, then making various offerings to the Medicine Buddha Bhaisajyaguru will liberate them from the lower realms. In the Noble Liberation of Maitreya, it says: For example, just as a single lamp, as soon as it is placed in a house or room, dispels the darkness accumulated for a thousand years, so too, as soon as a single mind of omniscience is generated, it dispels the karma and afflictions accumulated for countless eons. In the Moon Lamp Sutra, it says: For the sake of sentient beings, diligently striving, the Bodhicitta and the right

When the mind is detached, it gives rise to mindfulness; constant vigilance is the cause of immortality; if there is no clinging, it is the source of all happiness. In the "Sutra of Light," it says: Four things cause the wisdom of a Bodhisattva to decline. What are the four? Disrespect towards the Dharma and those who teach it; being stingy with the Dharma, and teachers concealing scriptures; obstructing those who seek the Dharma, thwarting their aspirations, and not teaching the Dharma; and praising oneself and disparaging others out of arrogance. Four things cause the forgetting of Bodhicitta. What are the four? Deceiving teachers, lamas, and benefactors; creating unwarranted regret for others; slandering those who have entered the Great Vehicle; and treating others with hypocrisy and deceit, rather than with sincerity. Four things cause the Bodhicitta not to be forgotten even until the essence of Bodhicitta, and to manifest immediately upon birth. What are the four? Not lying even for the sake of one's life, or even in jest; dwelling with a sincere heart towards all sentient beings, without hypocrisy; regarding all Bodhisattvas as teachers, and proclaiming their virtues in all directions; and maturing sentient beings because one does not desire the lesser vehicle, leading them to embrace unsurpassed Bodhi. These four are the true qualities of a Bodhisattva. What are the true qualities? Although all phenomena are constantly empty, one still deeply believes in the ripening of karma; although one abides in equanimity through the patience of no-self, one still generates great compassion for sentient beings; one's mind constantly abides in Nirvana, yet one's actions abide in Samsara; in order to fully mature sentient beings, one gives generously, yet one does not hope for karmic results. Poison that is empowered by mantras and medicine cannot cause death. Similarly, a Bodhisattva who is empowered by skillful means and wisdom cannot be made to fall by the poison of afflictions. Just as the impure waste of cities benefits sugarcane fields, so too do the afflictions of a Bodhisattva benefit the Dharma of the Buddhas. All views arise from emptiness.
