Encountering great compassion, being born near the city loved by those who practice Dharma, and being born in a land where the king acts according to Dharma. Just as the darkness of night from the womb of clouds, a flash of lightning illuminates the sky for a moment, similarly, by the power of the Buddhas, in hundreds of paths, worldly merit and wisdom occasionally arise. Thus, virtue is weak and constant, while sin is powerful and extremely unbearable. If it is not the complete Bodhicitta, what other virtue can suppress it? Although there is a desire to abandon suffering, one manifestly runs towards suffering itself. Although one desires happiness, due to ignorance, one destroys one's own happiness like an enemy. This untrustworthy Lord of Death, whether one has done or not done, does not stay. Whether sick or not, it comes suddenly, and life is unreliable. One must abandon everything and depart, but I have not known this. For the sake of friends and non-friends, I have committed various sins. Non-friends will also disappear, and friends will also disappear. I myself will also disappear. Thus, everything will disappear. Like experiencing a dream, in this short life, I have experienced countless friends and non-friends. The sins committed for their sake, no matter how unbearable, will be in front of me. Thus, I have not realized that this is a sudden event. Due to ignorance, attachment, and hatred, I have committed countless sins. Day and night without stopping, this life is constantly passing away. If there is no increase from elsewhere, why will I not die? I sit like a mute, although surrounded by many relatives and friends, the feeling of killing will be experienced by myself alone. When seized by the messengers of Yama, what is the use of relatives, what is the use of friends? If at that time there is merit as the only refuge, I have not relied on it. Not knowing such terror, for the sake of this impermanent life, I have accumulated many sins. Thus, because there is great terror, one should rely on a virtuous teacher and practice merit. If one must abandon relatives and friends and go alone, what is the use of friends and non-friends? Suffering arises from non-virtuous actions. How can one be liberated from it? Day and night I constantly

I should always think like this. Now, no matter what, I must make this human life meaningful. Like a blind person finding a jewel in a pile of rags. Similarly, by some coincidence, the mind of enlightenment has arisen in me. I must exert myself greatly in this thought. If I don't make effort from now on, I will go from bad to worse. Countless Buddhas who benefit sentient beings, although they have passed away, I have not become an object of taming due to my own faults. If I continue to do the same, I will experience bad migrations, bad things, death, and various sufferings. When will I ever again obtain such rare things as the appearance of the Tathagatas, having faith and obtaining a human body, and being able to practice virtue? In such a healthy day as this, even though there is food and no harm, life is a fleeting deception, and the body is like a borrowed image. With such conduct of mine, I will not obtain a human body in the future. If I do not obtain a human body, there will only be evil and no virtue. Even when I have the fortune to practice virtue, if I do not practice virtue, all the sufferings of the lower realms are ignorance. What use will I be then? Since I have not practiced virtue and have accumulated a great deal of sin, even after hundreds of millions of eons, I will not hear the name of a happy migration. Even if a meaningless enemy inflicts a wound, if I can cherish it as an ornament of the body, why should suffering harm me when I strive to accomplish a great purpose? Fishermen, farmers, butchers, and so on, even though they only think of their own livelihood, they can endure the harm of cold and heat. What more can I say for the sake of lasting happiness? Therefore, since sin arises from the mind, those who wish to protect the precepts should diligently tame their minds. If they do not tame this mind, they will not be able to protect the precepts. Letting go of the elephant of the mind will cause the harm of the uninterrupted hell. An untamed, intoxicated elephant does not cause such harm in this world. If the elephant of the mind is tightly bound with the rope of mindfulness, all fears will disappear, and all goodness will come into hand. By taming this mind alone, all harm-doers will be subdued. How can one subdue unruly sentient beings like the sky?
