A precious collection of letters sent to the Tibetan king and subjects. Pal Yang. A precious collection of letters sent to the Tibetan king and subjects. Pal Yang. A precious collection of letters residing with the Tibetan king and subjects. A precious collection of letters sent by the great monk Pal Yang to the Tibetan king and subjects. Destroy the heap of my deluded faults, perfect all virtues, become the sole protector and guide of beings. I prostrate to the all-knowing one. Kings and monks, and ministers belonging to various professions, each with their own guides and rulers, and farmers, merchants, and those who live by sharing, having obtained a human body, whether or not they have obtained leisure and endowments, and women, musicians, and the borderland Tibetan king and subjects, for the benefit of this life and the next, practice the ten virtues and sixteen virtues, cultivate the ten contemplations and ten practices, through practicing the six perfections, even having counted many lifetimes, in order to obtain a good body and happy migrations, and ultimately attain Buddhahood, listen to the sutras spoken from the Buddha's mouth, and please the virtuous teachers. Nagarjuna, Aryadeva, Gunaprabha, and Maitreya's "Bodhicharyavatara," and friendly letters, and the "Ratnavali," etc., from which beneficial instructions, and the many profound meanings, if explained extensively, would be difficult to understand, so I have compiled a small portion of what is easy to practice and understand. Generate the glory of taming, and listen as if drinking nectar. The ten virtues are wonderful, as it says in the sutras: Well restrain bodily conduct, do not kill, steal, or commit adultery. Do not speak divisive words, lies, harsh words, or frivolous talk. Do not be attached to desires, and have no hatred in your heart. Abandon all wrong views, this is the practice of a Bodhisattva. It says so. If one practices the ten non-virtues, what will be the result? In the Ratnavali it says: One who kills has a short life, and dwells long in the hell realms. One who harms others suffers much harm, and experiences suffering in all lifetimes. One who steals loses wealth, and is born as a hungry ghost in all lifetimes. Stinginess

Greed begets enemies, and the heart of a wife grows distant. Speaking falsehoods invites slander, and words are never proper. Sowing discord separates friends, and one is often deceived by others. Harsh words bring unpleasantness, and many will speak ill of you. Idleness leads to nothing, and one is looked down upon. Greed destroys the hopes of the mind, and harmful thoughts bring fear. Wrong views lead to evil views. Alcohol intoxicates the world, leading to loss of wealth, quarrels over trivial matters, and doing all that should not be done. Therefore, drinking should be in moderation. Thus it is said. The sixteen human virtues are: single-mindedly taking refuge in the Three Jewels, relying on ascetics and Brahmins, being upright and having an upright nature, being grateful and repaying kindness, honoring parents, respecting elders, being skilled in calendrical calculations, observing fasts on time, using fair and honest weights and measures, not being jealous of others, not harming others, accumulating merit for the next life for this purpose, adding these to the ten virtues, and if one protects them properly, one will obtain the body of gods and humans and not waste this life. Therefore, the Great Sage said that whoever has the right view of worldly people will not fall into the lower realms for thousands of lifetimes. Thus it is said. The ten things to always contemplate are: contemplating inevitable death, counting the accumulation of karma, relying on the Three Jewels, believing with a non-dual mind, strengthening the mind of enlightenment, loving those who enter the Great Vehicle, and praising with a garland of virtues. Thus it comes from the Sutra of the Garland of Merit. If one possesses these ten things to always contemplate, what merit will one obtain? Again, the sutras say: All the Buddhas of the three times have contemplated this, cutting off from the root the tree that produces the three poisons, for the dry firewood of afflictions, the spark of wisdom, self-illuminating and self-burning, arises from the mind and burns like ashes. Repelling the armies of the four maras, completely destroying the dwelling place of the maras. From now on, I will become a true victor, a source of happiness for all gods and humans, a tree of merit. Because one always contemplates what should be contemplated, therefore one is called Buddha.
