I (speak thus). The ten practices of Dharma are: Maitreya in the Madhyantavyūha says: writing, offering, giving, listening, upholding, reading, explaining, understanding the meaning, contemplating and meditating. These ten are the gateways to Dharma, the footprints of the guides. The one who knows all five sciences is called the All-Knowing. Therefore, a man of good lineage should also avoid sleep, negligence, laziness, and loving the household due to attachment to noise, idle talk, guarding the gate, gambling, watching gatherings, associating with bad friends, drinking and wandering at night, and the view of thinking one has leisure. Do not think of doing it today or tomorrow, if you do not strive like a rat digging, the Lord of Death, the demon, will be watching by your side. Thus it is said. The ten perfections are: generosity, ethics, patience, diligence, meditation, wisdom, skillful means, etc., are the boats to cross the ocean of samsara. Thus it is said. If these six perfections are not practiced, is there no other way? The Sutra says: giving is like provisions for a long journey, morality is like ornaments and clothes for the body and mind, patience is the bravery to defeat the enemy of afflictions, diligence is the good mount for comfortable travel on the path to liberation, meditation is the swiftness to realize the true meaning, and wisdom is the light to dispel the darkness of ignorance. Thus it is said. The Ratnavali also says: generosity brings wealth, ethics brings happiness, patience brings radiance, virtue brings majesty, meditation brings increase of wisdom, and compassion brings all accomplishments. All these seven, practicing the six perfections simultaneously, before attaining the bhumis, the happiness of samsara will also be complete, the name of the lower realms will not even be heard, and the eight unfree states will be permanently abandoned. Then, gradually attaining the bhumis, one will eventually attain the state of the Protector of the World. Thus it is said. Now, like this, I have briefly explained that one should practice and implement the ten virtues, the sixteen human dharmas, the ten constant thoughts, the ten practices of Dharma, the six perfections, etc. Now I will explain that merely reciting these Dharmas verbally is not beneficial. That is, in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra, the doctor's

If one does not listen to the various medicinal prescriptions, how can the patient who needs treatment be cured? Merely reciting medical texts, what benefit is it to the patient? Thus it is said. Offering advice to the great king, also in the letter offered to King Kanishka, it says: Although there are many teachings, who can accomplish all of them? If I were to give a brief instruction, for the sake of it being heard, I now inform you, from the two aspects of practice and abandonment, choose what is appropriate to practice. What should be abandoned, never do it. Like taking honey from a thorny tree, one should also take the good words spoken by the enemy. Like a stream of poison on a golden mountain, one should abandon the evil words of pleasing people. Briefly informing you thus, you should diligently practice it. Kingship, the world, cannot be brought from another world, nor can it be taken away. Only what is accumulated from the stream of merit, can only be enjoyed for a moment. Do not think that you have established a permanent foundation. One should rely on virtuous spiritual friends, with respect and reverence, listen to the holy Dharma. The Dharma that is heard, should be well analyzed, and be diligent in analysis. Do not be tormented by sorrow. In youth, health, wealth, and present things, wisdom is capable of everything. When indulging in pleasure and politics, one should promptly consult the wise. But eventually you will gradually understand. Even a small accumulation will surely increase rapidly. A constant stream of water droplets, if it falls without interruption, what vessel is there that cannot be filled? As this analogy is clear, the king should take this as a standard, and always rejoice in listening to the true Dharma. The selection of attendants and close ministers should be based on talent and virtue, be close to those who are good at managing wealth, intelligent and compassionate, not ungrateful, and not harming the public for personal gain, for your use. Choose people who can do difficult things, can give up difficult things, can endure difficult sufferings, can accept difficult insults, can think long-term and have conviction, can be adaptable and endure hardship, can be tolerant and brave, not be deceived and can keep secrets, and are happy to govern the country with the Dharma.
