There is no asceticism for a son. Therefore, be diligent in patience, and cultivate various practices according to the Dharma. If you hold a mind with the sting of hatred, your mind will not experience the feeling of happiness. Meditate on patience by thinking of it as an illusion. If it can be remedied, then there is no need to be unhappy. But if it cannot be remedied, what is the use of being unhappy about it? Some people, when they see their own blood, will pour it out and become enemies with themselves. Some people, when they see the blood of others, will faint and pass out. This is due to the stability of the mind and past habits. Similarly, when doing good deeds, should you make up your mind or not? You cannot leave your family, and you worry about the fields being abandoned, and you think about practicing the Dharma, and you want to achieve lasting happiness, these two will not succeed. You should give alms, and you worry about running out, these two cannot coexist. You want to be a hero, and you are afraid of dying, these two cannot coexist. You want to please many people, and you want to do fierce things, these two cannot coexist. You should study diligently, and you want to seek wealth, these two cannot coexist. You want to be an excellent monk, and you are attached to the world, these two cannot coexist. You want to be respected by everyone, and you behave badly, these two cannot coexist. You want to please the king, and you want to sleep at home, these two cannot coexist. You want to achieve Buddhahood, and you commit sins, these two cannot coexist. Similarly, whatever you do, you must make up your mind to do it. Only then will all your needs be fulfilled. The Protector of the World said this. These teachings can be found in the Sutras, and you should always read the Sutras. If you can do these things, you will be happy. Just as there is no movement without wind. Without merit and diligence, there will be no change. Destroy the power of laziness and sloth, and practice day and night without interruption. Then there will be no possibility of no result. It is like crossing the ocean of samsara, and all the needs of this world and beyond are fulfilled. Sentient beings have various inclinations, and even the Buddhas cannot please them all, so what can a bad person like me say? Therefore, abandon thoughts of the world, scold those sentient beings who have not gained benefits, and speak unpleasant words to those who have gained benefits. How can happiness arise from those who are difficult to get along with by nature? Therefore, you should live in a solitary place.

Oh! I will emulate the actions of the wise, remembering the teachings of mindfulness, to dispel sleep and drowsiness. Like the great compassion of the Bodhisattvas, I will fashion reason into a pillar, abandoning childish behaviors, and in short, wholeheartedly dedicate myself to benefiting myself and others. Even with such instructions, if I fail to put them into practice, if I do not become hungry for cultivation, then the benefits throughout all lifetimes, are as spoken from the mouth of the Thus-Gone One. Eliminating all sins, perfecting all virtues, whatever merit there is from reciting these, if it were to have a form, even realms as numerous as the sands of the Ganges would not be able to contain it. These twenty verses, whether in a temple or a shrine, or before a stupa or statue, or in any other place, should be spoken thus. Recite them three times day and night, and to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, as well as the Bodhisattvas, with body, speech, and mind, respectfully prostrate and take refuge. I prostrate to those worthy of offerings. Turning away from sinful actions, completely upholding all merits, I rejoice in all the merits of sentient beings. I touch the ground with my head, with palms joined, in order to turn the wheel of Dharma, in order for beings to abide, I request the perfectly enlightened Buddhas. With the merit of acting thus, and all that I have done and not done, may all sentient beings, possess the unsurpassed Bodhicitta. May all sentient beings be without defilement.
