Arising from... the undefiled and defiled dharmas are dissimilar, which is dependent on dissimilarity. Those that are similar in virtue have a similar aspect. The mind and mental aggregates of the peak of existence, the cessation of uninterrupted attainment, and the arising and cessation of non-ideational activity, also give rise to mind and mental aggregates from the attainment of cessation; from the mind of liberation arises the mind of non-liberation, from the mind of desire arises the mind of hatred; from the mind of virtue arises the mind of non-virtue; from the mind that acts in the desire realm arises the mind that acts in the form realm; from the mind that acts in the form realm arises the mind that acts in the formless realm; such as these and so on, are dependent on dissimilarity. The mind and mental aggregates of the peak of existence are extremely subtle, and are the cause to be explained, because they have a similar aspect. The arising of mind and mental aggregates from the attainment of cessation, even at the time of the attainment of cessation, the characteristic of karma is blocked, but the characteristic of lineage is not blocked, therefore, from the cause of the nature of knowledge, the nature of karma, mind and mental aggregates arise, which is a similar aspect. From the mind of liberation arises the mind of non-liberation, which is also the same nature in the characteristic of complete knowledge; from the mind of virtue arises the mind of non-virtue, which is also the same in the nature of mind; from the mind that acts in the desire realm arises the mind that acts in the form realm, and so on, which also arise from the cause of having afflictions, which is similar, and this is a similar aspect, these should be known as internal dharmas. If one wants to use one example to illustrate external dharmas and internal dharmas, one can also combine them appropriately according to the order. Thus, arising in dependence on similarity and dissimilarity, it also arises from the excellent holy dharma of mindfulness, that is, from similarity arises similarity, from dissimilarity arises, from similarity arises non-similarity, and from partial similarity arises partial similarity, there are four situations. Among them, if one asks how the cause of similarity is similar? For example, just as a seed arises from the cause of a seed, it is like that.

If the inner virtuous actions are similar, then the resulting fruits in the realms of gods and humans are also similar, this is the first extreme. Dissimilar things lead to dissimilar results, like sour yogurt coming from sweet milk. Similarly, inner actions, influenced by the pleasures of worldly defilements, such as sounds, touches, tastes, forms, and smells caused by desire, like sour yogurt, lead sentient beings to experience unpleasant, bad, and undesirable results in hells, animal realms, and hungry ghost realms, this is the second extreme. Dissimilar things may lead to similar results, like mixing madder and madder root produces different colors. Similarly, in the maturation of the fruits of inner actions, there are cases where actions and results are dissimilar, and results and actions are dissimilar. For example, wrong views on giving lead people to slaughter livestock for the sake of attaining heavenly pleasures, but they end up falling into hells, this is the third extreme. Partially similar things lead to partially similar results, like coarse white cloth coming from fine white thread, although they differ in thickness. Similarly, accumulating small non-virtuous actions leads sentient beings to be born in great hells, this is the fourth extreme. This is what the Buddha said. What is naming based on similarity? For example, these things are similar because their names and categories are similar, or because their characteristics and functions are similar, or because their nature and properties are similar, these are naming based on similarity. What is naming based on dissimilarity? For example, it is not unobstructed and ungraspable like space, because it has obstruction and can be destroyed, therefore it is form. Or, because it is the opposite of the characteristics of form, therefore it is space. Longer than short, because it has not reached the extent of long, therefore it is short. It is not flawed like the completely impure, therefore it is completely pure. Because there are no qualities like the completely pure, therefore it is the completely impure. These are naming based on dissimilarity. Similarity and
