Things that appear similar when burning from a distance, but are different because their essential nature is fire and water. A man remains in his own state, and a woman enters a man's state, both having the essential nature of a man. There are also cases where a woman exists, but is inconsistent, yet the manner of the sign is consistent. To solidify butter, it is placed in cold water, or placing it in cold water can also melt molasses. The nature of solidifying and melting is different in these two cases. The action of placing in water is the same. Gluing something with glue, it stays in place with heat when dry, and melting borax also requires heat. Like this, the action of staying in place with heat is the same, but the nature of drying and melting is different, and so on. Launching a boat on water and building a bridge have different natures, but they are similar in that they both facilitate crossing the water. Riding livestock and entering a vehicle have different natures, but they are similar in that they both facilitate traveling on a road, and so on. Taking medicine like arura and taking medicine like cotton both cure illness, but the medicines are different. The causes are different, but the result of obtaining well-being is the same. Eating different foods like grains, meat, and vegetables leads to satiation. The types of food are different, but the satiation is the same, and so on. Eating one type of food when hungry and eating one type of food when full, one leads to satiation and comfort, and the other leads to sickness and discomfort. The cause of eating is the same, but the difference between comfort and sickness leads to different results. Like camphor and sandalwood, they are used to treat both cold and hot diseases. The hot disease is cured, and the cold disease is aggravated. The cause of the medicine is the same, but the results of curing and aggravating are different, and so on. In this way, there are similarities and differences, and it is not permissible to assume that all aspects are different. Furthermore, the definition that aims at similarity with something else, along with examples, because there exists a definition that aims at dissimilarity in all things, to accomplish this, because it is uncertain, it is called the definition of incomplete pervasion. Thus, that definition is explained. Aiming at similarity with something else, different from that

The so-called "as it is" is just as previously stated, different from the five characteristics of valid cognition (pramāṇa), and different from the characteristics of the object. The explanation of "including examples" etc., is similar to the valid cognition of direct perception (pratyakṣa) of the Mīmāṃsā school, such as the Nirgrantha, etc. Direct perception is the knowledge of the first sight, born solely from the object, like the consciousness of a child or a mute person. The reason for saying this is that one does not want other characteristics, so at times, one may mistake a tree stump for a person. It is judged through proximate cause (hetu). Understanding is that the proximate cause becomes an obstacle, because there are inconsistent signs, etc. The subsequent inference of the three aspects of the reason (trirūpa hetu) of the Vaitandika school is the same as the characteristic of inference of the Vaiśeṣika school, that is, it is established by being related to the inferable thing, and infers by the sign of existing where that thing exists, and not existing where that thing does not exist. They say this, and it corresponds to it, because it shows inconsistencies through universality. The inference of self and other of the Sāṃkhya and Vaitandika schools, etc., is also the same as the valid cognition of the Nyāya school, it is merely the inference of seeing signs such as smoke, because it does not combine with other characteristics, so when seeing smoke, it may be confused with similar things such as clouds, for example, inferring that there is fire where it is raining, because there are inconsistencies such as nature. The non-apprehension (anupalabdhi) of the Vaitandika school is the same as the non-existence valid cognition (abhāva pramāṇa) of the Mīmāṃsā school, because in a certain direction, due to not observing the pot and the characteristic of observation, in the field of use, the pot does not exist. Just as the rabbit's horn, etc., are established in other non-existent fields. The reason for saying this is that from the empty space where the pot does not exist, the non-existence of the pot appears, and also because it is proven by not existing elsewhere, and there is no distinction between the prover and the proven, because there are inconsistencies in nature. If there is the inference valid cognition of the Cārvāka school, then "if this exists, because this exists, it is proven that it is produced from this," this is also the same as "having prerequisites" in the inference of the Nyāya school, this is also combined with reasoning, and inquiring into what the internal basis is composed of, such as wind and bile, etc., exist inside the body, but cannot be seen, so it cannot be determined that they are produced from those things.
