For example, measuring and establishing the proposition, Nirvana is tranquility, being free from all suffering, transcending all characteristics, as such the teachings that expound the three doors of liberation, that is the characteristic of scripture. The Omniscient One directly sees Nirvana and teaches it, what comes from scripture is the characteristic of near direct perception. If examined in conjunction with reason, temporary suffering can be removed by abandoning the cause, all phenomena are without inherent existence, and can be meditated upon in any way, therefore, it is reasonable that there is also a Nirvana where suffering and all characteristics are pacified, this is the characteristic of near inference. As the characteristic of Nirvana is described in the "Holy Sutra of Unraveling the Thought," similarly, in other texts belonging to the Great Vehicle, such as the Holy Bodhisattva Pitaka, it is also said that Nirvana is the pacification of suffering and all characteristics, this is the characteristic of example of its own kind. When three characteristics are assembled, there is a single certainty of accomplishment, this is the characteristic of complete establishment. Thus, with the scripture of valid cognition possessing five characteristics, Nirvana is established as the characteristic of tranquility. The twelfth chapter, the chapter on the scripture of reliable valid cognition. In the impure reason, what are the seven characteristics of impurity? They are: the characteristic of focusing on what is similar to something else, the characteristic of focusing on what is dissimilar to something else, the characteristic of focusing on what is similar to everything, the characteristic of focusing on what is dissimilar to everything, the characteristic of example that is similar to the nature of its own kind, the characteristic of complete establishment, and the characteristic of showing the body's impurity. The distinctions of these spoken words are explained below. The so-called focusing on what is similar to something else has two aspects: the valid cognition that is not the five pure characteristics, the focusing on what is similar to something else, and the characteristic of the object of conditioned phenomena, such as impermanence, but instead focusing on permanence and self, etc., with the four inverted views, and the focusing on what is similar to the nature of unconditioned phenomena, and so on. The so-called focusing on what is dissimilar to something else, the "something else" in this case is as before.

The objects of disagreement are of two types: disagreeing with other valid cognitions and disagreeing with the nature of other objects. For example, some people consider only direct perception to be valid and hold that there is no other world, which is not immediately visible, and those who hold to annihilationism, etc. Considering all things to be in agreement is impure direct perception. Considering all things to be in disagreement is impure inference. An example of agreement with other types is demonstrating with wrong actions. Impure hesitation is the perverted nature of what has been established. Impure scripture is the scripture taught by someone who is not omniscient. Among these, if it is said that "all phenomena are known by the consciousness of mind, they are the very nature of being known by consciousness," this is said to be the nature of considering all things to be in agreement. How is this impure direct perception? Because the word "is" in "is the very nature of being known" indicates the meaning of direct perception, meaning that all phenomena are objects of the consciousness of mind. Therefore, the consciousness of mind, which is not led by the five sense consciousnesses of form, also grasps all external objects as being directly perceived, and also grasps objects that are past, future, and hidden, etc., which are objects of memory that counteract habitual tendencies, as if the objects themselves were directly perceived. In this way, only considering the consciousness of mind as a valid direct perception is impure because all things are considered to be in agreement. Furthermore, the nature of the consciousness of mind is that it always possesses three kinds of conceptualization, but because subtle conceptualizations are not clear and are obscured, the arising of considering it to be non-conceptual direct perception leads to the six consciousnesses all being grasped as having the same nature, thus all things become considered to be in agreement. Therefore, it is impure in terms of its nature. Drawing from that reasoning, what is considered to belong to this category is that for all phenomena, with six aspects such as characteristics and nature, some agree and some disagree, but all things are considered to be the same. For example, just as sentient beings have minds, it is also said that trees, grass, and medicine, etc., also have minds, as well as earth, stones, and food, etc.
