Just as alcohol and other things arise from the aggregation of causes and conditions, so too, the consciousness of beings arises from the aggregation of the four great elements and does not go to other worlds, so they say. All those who abide in the path of asceticism and vows are equally on the path to liberation, so they say. For all phenomena, whether obscured or unobscured, they believe that they can only be perceived through direct perception, and they believe that there is nothing that cannot be perceived through direct perception. Such things as these are all that are agreed upon. If anything differs in any aspect of sign, nature, function, dharma, cause, or effect, then they must necessarily differ from each other, and this is the characteristic of differing in all aspects, so they say. How then is this an impure inference? Because through the difference of one of the six (sign, etc.), one can infer that its other aspects must also be different, therefore it is an inference. Although different in some aspects, yet similar in some aspects, one infers that they are different in all aspects, which is impure in its characteristic, and therefore it is called an impure inference. What then is a sign? It is like the dharma that is determined to exist for something that cannot be perceived by direct perception. What is nature? It is its own characteristic. What is function? It is what it does. What is dharma? It is the rule. What is cause? It is what produces it. What is effect? It is what it produces. The distinctions of these are explained by examples: What is the sign of earth? It appears as a stable existence. Its nature is hardness. Its function is holding. Its dharma is being stackable. Its cause is clinging to hardness. Its effect is arising from the elements. The sign of summer water is a water bird. Its nature is wetness. Its function is gathering. Its dharma is sinking. Its cause is clinging to the wetness of sentient beings. Its effect is becoming moist and soft. The sign of fire is smoke. Its nature is warmth. Its function is cooking. Its dharma is burning. Its cause is clinging to the heat of sentient beings. Its effect is becoming ripe. The sign of wind is dust and sound. Its nature is movement. Its function is moving. Its dharma is

is non-abiding. The cause is the movement and discrimination of sentient beings. The result is having become moved. The trunk is the tree and, the liquor there. The nature is a butcher. The action is showing. The dharma is that which can be cut. The cause is its own seed. The result is its own fruit. The sign of sentient beings is speaking and moving. The nature is discriminating consciousness. The action is doing benefit, or harm, or neither. The dharma is dependent on living. The cause is virtuous and non-virtuous and immovable actions. The result is happiness and suffering, and neither happiness nor suffering. If one were to differentiate from sentient beings, then the sign of ordinary beings is playing and clamoring. The nature is discriminating consciousness with defilements. The action is seeking the purpose of one's own lineage. The dharma is being under the power of the eight worldly dharmas. The cause is action and afflictions. The result is a part. The sign of a Bodhisattva is extending the hand in giving and being steadfast. The nature is wisdom endowed with compassion and loving-kindness. The action is benefiting sentient beings. The dharma is being gentle and being under the power of the dharma. The cause is virtuous friends teaching the supreme dharma. The result is the Buddha, the Bhagavan. Among these, what is it that, by one disagreement, everything is regarded as disagreeing? Humans and animals differ in their ways of intelligence and so on. Humans have a future life, but animals do not, so it is said. Even if there is a future life, it continues in the same species, and one will not be reborn as a human from an animal, so it is said. Because one aspect is different, it is not permissible to regard everything as different. For example, in winter, steam arises from barley inside, and ice appears from other water. Although the signs are different, the nature of what is signified is the same as water, and a man remains in his own state, and a man enters a woman's state, and so on. Although the signs are different, the nature of the man is also the same, so it is not permissible to put different signs into the category of mutually determined disagreement. Wherever there is the sign of fire burning, smoke arises, and wherever there is the sign of rain falling, mist arises.
