That is the nature of the scriptural authority. Thus, through direct perception that is completely purified by the five characteristics, impermanence is fully established. Focusing on all conditioned phenomena as suffering, experiencing the harm of birth and so on, knowing individually and personally is the nature of direct perception. Observing those who experience suffering as being unbearable, inferring from the result that it is the nature of suffering, understanding this is the nature of proximate inference. Among conditioned phenomena that possess the characteristic of suffering, suffering is also manifest in birth, just as there is a separate dharma in old age and sickness, or any of the four modes of conduct, if one remains for a long time, it is shown by the example of being similar to suffering. Combining this with empowerment, it is the nature of the example of its own kind. The certainty that those three characteristics are assembled and established is the nature of complete ascertainment. As the Omniscient One said, in the scriptural authority of the three baskets, the statement that all conditioned phenomena are suffering appears, which is the nature of scriptural authority. Thus, through direct perception that is completely purified by the five characteristics, it is established as suffering. Regarding all phenomena as selfless, saying that this is the nature of self, such as being permanent and singular without distinction, knowing individually and personally that it is selfless is the nature of direct perception. The five aggregates are related to the nature of self, and there are six kinds of signs and so on. Because nothing is found, understanding that it is the nature of selflessness is the nature of proximate inference. Among conditioned phenomena that are selfless, there is also the direct perception of being without independence, such as a vase and so on relying on conditions, or it is shown by the example of a wooden cart being joined together. Combining this with the impossibility of having a self, it is the nature of the example of its own kind. The certainty that those three characteristics are assembled and established is the nature of complete ascertainment. As the Omniscient One said in the scriptural authority, the scriptural authority states that all phenomena are selfless. Thus, through direct perception that is completely purified by the five characteristics, it is established as selfless. Why is it a collection of direct perceptions? Because there is no obscuration, direct perception is based on the object. The nature is not

Because it is determined without contradiction, it is valid cognition. Furthermore, if one sees an illusionary person, perceiving it as the specific characteristics of a person, and a person afflicted with jaundice perceiving a conch shell as yellow, and a person with cataracts seeing the crescent moon as two, and a person with an ear ailment always hearing the sound of wind and water, and so forth, these are each known by oneself, and are the nature of direct perception. Among the six characteristics, because one knows from what one understands, one knows it is an illusion, or one is afflicted with jaundice, or one has entered the fault of cataracts, or one has wind entering the ear, and so forth, and one understands that it appears as something it is not, this is the nature of inferential cognition. Among those that appear differently due to the power of conditions, it is easy to understand that mirages appear as water, and if one eats Datura, the mountains appear yellow, and if one looks with a blindfold, one sees two or three or more moons, and when there is an echo from a rock, it sounds as if there is someone speaking, and in situations like these, even though it is not one's own nature, it is possible to perceive something different due to conditions, which is the nature of an example of one's own kind. The nature of being definitely one when those three natures are assembled is the nature of pervasiveness. Thus, with direct perception that is completely pure with four natures, one can establish the knowledge of illusions and so forth. Why is that? Because whatever is appropriate for whatever condition is encountered, it is seen without being obscured by that, therefore it is direct perception. One understands one's own nature, and because it does not follow due to being transformed by conditions, it is valid cognition. Also, in another way, after a yogi meditates, seeing white bones and so forth, and seeing exhausted earth and so forth, and seeing oneself as the size of a thumb, and perceiving things like these, is the nature of direct perception. At that time, understanding that these did not exist before meditation, but arose from the power of meditation, is the nature of inferential cognition. Before the eyes that have been bitten by snakes and scorpions, a piece of rope, or a piece of charcoal, or other things, are also seen as snakes or scorpions.
