Since things that should not be valid cognitions (pramāṇa) are taken as valid cognitions, and knowing what is happening, what will happen, and what will happen in the future, this valid cognition is taught in order to cut through the net of wrong views. What is called valid cognition is like measuring length with inches, measuring quantity with bushels, and measuring weight with scales. There are three valid cognitions: direct perception, inference, and trustworthy scripture. It is said that there are three valid cognitions because there are three kinds of things: obscured, unobscured, and even more obscured phenomena. Therefore, three valid cognitions are taught. Thus, there are direct perception, inference, and trustworthy scripture. The characteristics of these valid cognitions, even if it is just one, should be understood as five, which are the five completely pure characteristics that are spoken of. Therefore, it is said that it is completely pure through the five characteristics. How is it completely pure? Direct perception determines whether it is mistaken or not through inference. Inference determines the meaning through direct experience. Doubts about these two, direct perception and inference, are clarified through examples of their own kind. When these three come together, because it is certain that they will be established, they are completely certain and belong to the category of worldly valid cognitions. Scripture represents and shows those who do not understand that there are things that are superior to human beings. These five characteristics will make it completely pure. Whether it is worldly phenomena or transcendent phenomena, everything that allows one to understand the meaning will be understood through the complete and pure characteristics. For transcendent phenomena and things that are difficult to understand, it is necessary to combine and examine each of these five characteristics one by one, so the differences in characteristics will be clearly apparent. For worldly phenomena and things that are easy to understand, although they can be understood through the four characteristics by valid cognition, these things that are measured are often familiar, so there is no need to learn them many times, and the differences in characteristics are also quick and subtle, appearing as if they are not apparent. The ninth chapter, the number of valid cognitions and the teachings on characteristics.

What is direct perception (pratyakṣa)? It is that which, in an unobstructed field, is preceded by direct perception and is completely purified by five characteristics such as proximate inference. What are these? One of the five consciousnesses such as the eye, and the consciousness of mind led by it, the two of which individually cognize what form there is in their respective objects, is the characteristic of direct perception; and whatever is perceived directly, together with its signs, etc., is understood by inferring from direct perception, is the characteristic of proximate inference; and that which is of the same kind as this also exists elsewhere, is the characteristic of the example of one's own kind that establishes in the world; and that the three are in harmony and become established is the characteristic of pervasiveness; and that the characteristics of the dharmas arise as stated in the scriptures that possess the characteristic of being definitely spoken by the omniscient one is combined with the characteristic of the scriptures. By the consciousness of mind alone, directly perceiving its own object such as the realm of dharmas, combined with the five characteristics, is also the same. The direct perception of the valid cognition, completely purified by the five characteristics, measures and establishes impermanence, etc., as previously explained, whatever is cognized as conditioned, all of which perceive the similar and dissimilar continuum, the latter arising and the former ceasing, and perceive the similar and dissimilar actions, the latter not arising and the former abandoning, these are individually cognized, is the characteristic of direct perception. Therein, when similar and dissimilar continua arise as other and different continua, understanding that it is impermanent because the former has ceased, is the characteristic of proximate inference. Conditioned phenomena, even among those that possess the characteristic of permanence, also appear as impermanent, as shown by the example of the continuum of fire, where the flame ceases and the firewood turns into ashes and charcoal, combined with the empowerment and establishing impermanence, is the characteristic of the example of one's own kind. The aggregation of these three characteristics to establish certainty as one is the characteristic of pervasiveness. Whatever is understood as spoken by the omniscient one is the characteristic of proximate inference. All conditioned phenomena are impermanent.
