The non-discriminating mind consciousness arises. If an eye consciousness arises at one time, then a discriminating mind consciousness that shares the same object of experience as the eye consciousness also arises at one time. If two, three, four, or the five aggregates of consciousness arise simultaneously, then a discriminating mind consciousness that shares the same object of experience as the five aggregates of consciousness also arises. For example, just as when the great river of vast intelligence flows, if the proximate cause for the arising of waves from one to many is present, then many waves arise; and just as when one image arises in the center of a mirror, if the proximate cause for the arising of many images is present, then many also arise, but the flow of water does not cease, and the center of the mirror does not become the nature of the images, nor does it appear to be completely exhausted, so it is said. The consciousness taken from this sutra refers to the Alaya consciousness. In the chapter on vast intelligence in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, it is said that relying on the Alaya consciousness, the six aggregates of consciousness arise. This meaning is also explained in the Lankavatara Sutra. Therein, the great intelligence spoken of, the eye consciousness, arises from four causes. What are the four? They are: not comprehending the appearance of one's own mind, being manifestly attached to the habitual tendencies of the form of karma, the place of elaboration, from beginningless time, the essence of the nature of consciousness, and marveling at the characteristics of various forms. Great intelligence, with these four causes, the wave of eye consciousness arises from the Alaya consciousness, which is like a stream of water. Just as the eye consciousness is, so it is with the minute particles and pores of all the senses. Just as images of objects appear one after another in a mirror, and just as the ocean is stirred by the wind, so the wind of objects and the waves of the ocean of mind, the action of arising is continuous, and its nature is the nature of karma and lineage liberated from sameness and difference.

And, without comprehending the very nature of the extremely related self-nature, the five aggregates of consciousness enter. These five aggregates of consciousness, together with the mind, fully comprehend the characteristic of distinguishing cause and object, called the consciousness of mind, they arise from their respective causes and enter intensely. They and the mind also together, become causes to each other, and enter with attachment to the conceptual thoughts that appear in their own minds, do not think like that, but in the characteristic of being non-different from each other, they enter together to distinguish the objects of ignorance, so it is said. In the Lankavatara Sutra, the arising of the four causes of eye consciousness and so on, shows the determination of the cause of things. Among them, not comprehending the attachment to one's own appearance is called the object, therefore, form and so on are considered as the condition of the object. From beginningless time, attachment to the habits of elaboration and the form of bad states is called the condition, therefore, the eye and so on are considered as the dominant condition. The essence of consciousness is said to be the condition of mind and mental factors being interrupted by others, this is the immediately preceding condition. Being amazed at the characteristics of various forms of color is the co-emergent and corresponding dharma, this is the causal condition. Just like eye consciousness, the four conditions of other consciousnesses are also as mentioned above. Among them, the forms that appear should be combined according to their respective consciousnesses, with sound, smell, taste, touch, dharma, and so on. The atoms and pores of all the senses are called the eye faculty being like an Utpala flower, up to the body faculty being like armor, these are all pleasing forms, and consciousness arises from their atoms and pores. Arising from the Alaya consciousness is shown to be like the example of a mirror and water. Being called liberated from one and different refers to the entering consciousness and the Alaya consciousness being one and different.
