Shila, derived from "Shilasmatho," means entering into good conduct, strictly observing precepts, and abandoning the name of unwholesomeness. Another saying is "Shitaladavatjira," which means to calm the suffering of afflictions and make it cool. In reality, not engaging in unwholesome deeds and guarding precepts is called "precepts." Samba, which means that body, speech, and mind do not do unwholesome deeds, preventing and guarding, so it is called "prevention." Dhataguna, derived from "Dhotaguna," means dwelling in a quiet place and the merits of begging for alms, etc., constantly practicing to purify and brighten them, so it is called "the merit of practice." Sanlekha, derived from "Lekhabilekhana," means abandoning everything except the bhikkhu's utensils, the three dharma robes and the bowl, etc., reducing affairs, and acting in one way without change, so it is called "reducing utensils." Poshta, Posha is "Pushna," which means nourishing and increasing good dharma. Da is "Davagatishudha," which means running or purifying.
