The Second Volume of Phonetics (sGra sByor). The Second Volume of Phonetics (sGra Sbyor). ༄༅! The Second Volume of Phonetics is present. Homage to the Buddha (Sanskrit: Namo Buddhāya). First fascicle. In the Year of the Horse, Trisong Detsen, the Tsangpo, resided at the palace of Onchang (’On-cang) for hunting. He subdued the old rebel soldiers and great thieves from Upper and Lower Tibet. The envoy from Garlog paid homage. The great minister Zhang Trisur Ramshak (Zhang Khri-zur Ram-shag) and Mangje Lha-od (Mang-rje Lha-’od), among others, offered many royal estates and presented mostly mules, horses, and yaks. In return for the rewards bestowed upon the ministers and officials, the abbot of Nyi-og, Acharya Jinamitra (Sanskrit: Ācārya Jinamitra), Surendra Bodhi (Sanskrit: Surendra Bodhi), Shilendra Bodhi (Sanskrit: Śīlendra Bodhi), Danaśīla (Sanskrit: Dānaśīla), Bodhimitra (Sanskrit: Bodhimitra), and the Tibetan abbot Ratnarakṣita (Sanskrit: Ratnarakṣita), Dharma Tāśīla (Sanskrit: Dharma Tāśīla), the learned translator Jñānāsena (Sanskrit: Jñānāsena), Jayarakṣita (Sanskrit: Jayarakṣita), Mañjuśrīvarma (Sanskrit: Mañjuśrīvarma), Ratnendraśīla (Sanskrit: Ratnendraśīla), and others, wrote in a catalog the terms translated from Indian languages into Tibetan from the Great and Small Vehicles. And he commanded that these terms should never be altered and that everyone should be able to learn them. Previously, during the reign of the divine son Yab, Acharya Bodhisattva (Sanskrit: Ācārya Bodhisattva), Yeshe Wangpo (Ye-shes Dbang-po), Zhang Gyal Nyennyazang (Zhang rGyal Nyan-nya-bzang), Minister Trizer Sangshi (Khri-gzher Sang-shi), the translator Jñānadeva Koṣa (Sanskrit: Jñānadeva Koṣa), Lhekye Druk (lCe Khyi-’brug), the Brahmin Ānanda (Sanskrit: Ānanda), and others, named many Buddhist terms that were previously unknown in Tibet. Some of these did not conform to the Buddhist scriptures and the rules of grammar. Those that could not be corrected were corrected. The language master Geso Tsal (sKad kyi ming gCes-so-’tshal) also added some, making them consistent with the content of the Great and Small Vehicles, the explanations of the ancient great abbots Nāgārjuna (Sanskrit: Nāgārjuna), Vasubandhu (Sanskrit: Vasubandhu), and others, and the rules of grammar. Those words that were difficult to understand were separated and explained logically, and written into the texts. Those words that should not be explained were translated phonetically, and the accuracy of the pronunciation was emphasized, and thus they were named. For those words that should be named according to their meaning, the accuracy of the meaning was emphasized, and thus they were named. In the presence of the Emperor, the great Pandit Palgyi Yontan (Ban-dhe chen-po dPal-gyi Yon-tan) and the great Pandit Tingngezin (Ban-dhe chen-po Ting-nge-’dzin), among others, also gathered and reported to the king and ministers.
