Therefore, they are called the seven factors of enlightenment. Alternatively, according to the Vibhāṣā, it is merely an explanation of the names listed in order. Because these seven are the near cause for accomplishing the three enlightenments, they are called factors of enlightenment on the path of meditation. Therefore, it is called the noble eightfold path. Alternatively, according to the Vibhāṣā, it is the path that leads to seeing the noble fruit and what was previously unseen. Therefore, it is described as the path of seeing. The four immeasurables are called "catvārya pramāṇa" (Sanskrit: catvārya pramāṇa, meaning "four immeasurables"), which are the four immeasurables. By meditating on loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, pervading countless beings, it is called the four immeasurables. The names for meditation and samādhi, etc., are called "dhyāna" (Sanskrit: dhyāna, meaning "meditation"), which is also called "dhyai citta yan" (Sanskrit: dhyai citta yan, meaning "meditative mind"), referring to the mind. By meditating with focused thought on a single object, such as impermanence or emptiness, it is called meditation. The term "anāgāmya" (Sanskrit: anāgāmya, meaning "non-returner") or "na syāgāmya" (Sanskrit: na syāgāmya, meaning "no return") refers to the state where, with the mind absorbed in the first dhyāna, all the afflictions of the three realms can be eliminated without exception. Therefore, it is called non-returning. The term "dhyānāntara" (Sanskrit: dhyānāntara, meaning "intermediate dhyāna") means "dhyāna" (Sanskrit: dhyāna, meaning "meditation") is meditation, and "antari" (Sanskrit: antari, meaning "intermediate") is a distinction or difference.
