Earth Rabbit year. Chapter Two. Names of the Ten Perfections and the Thirty-seven Factors of Enlightenment, etc. The Ten Perfections are called "Dasha Paramita" in Sanskrit (Sanskrit: Daśa pāramitā, Romanized Sanskrit: Daśa pāramitā, Literal meaning: Ten Perfections). Dasha means ten, and Paramita means "Para Ita Paramita" (Sanskrit: para ita pāramitā, Romanized Sanskrit: para ita pāramitā, Literal meaning: The other shore to the other shore), which are generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, wisdom, skillful means, aspiration, strength, and knowledge. By practicing and meditating on these ten, one ultimately reaches perfection, without leaving anything out, hence they are called the Ten Perfections. The names of the Thirty-seven Factors of Enlightenment, etc., are called "Sapta Trimsha Bodhipaksha" in Sanskrit (Sanskrit: sapta triṃśa bodhipakṣa, Romanized Sanskrit: sapta triṃśa bodhipakṣa, Literal meaning: Thirty-seven Factors of Enlightenment), also called "Bodhi ranuguruṇatvād Bodhipaksha" (Sanskrit: bodhi ranuguruṇatvād bodhipakṣa, Romanized Sanskrit: bodhi ranuguruṇatvād bodhipakṣa, Literal meaning: Enlightenment following). Bodhi means enlightenment, and Paksha means following or belonging to its category. From the Four Mindfulnesses to the Eightfold Noble Path, there are thirty-seven dharmas. These thirty-seven dharmas belong to the category of the three enlightenments, hence they are called the Thirty-seven Factors of Enlightenment. The Four Mindfulnesses are called "Chatvari Smrityupasthana" in Sanskrit (Sanskrit: catvāri smṛtyupasthāna, Romanized Sanskrit: catvāri smṛtyupasthāna, Literal meaning: Four Mindfulnesses), also called "Prajñāya Smṛti Rūpa Tiṣṭhate" (Sanskrit: prajñāya smṛti rūpa tiṣṭhate, Romanized Sanskrit: prajñāya smṛti rūpa tiṣṭhate, Literal meaning: With wisdom, mindfulness, form, abiding). Smriti means mindfulness, Upa means near, and Sthana means abiding. Generally, with wisdom, one examines the self-characteristics and common characteristics of the four: body, mind, feelings, and dharmas. Mindfulness clearly grasps what is seen, and mindfulness is particularly important, hence they are called the Four Mindfulnesses. The Four Right Exertions are called "Chatvari Samyakprahana" in Sanskrit (Sanskrit: catvāri samyakprahāṇa, Romanized Sanskrit: catvāri samyakprahāṇa, Literal meaning: Four Right Exertions). Chatvari means four, Samyak means correct, and Prahana means abandonment. With diligence, one generates virtue and abandons evil and unwholesome dharmas, hence they are called the Four Right Exertions. The Four Legs of Miraculous Power are called "Chatvari Ṛddhipada" in Sanskrit (Sanskrit: catvāri ṛddhipāda, Romanized Sanskrit: catvāri ṛddhipāda, Literal meaning: Four Legs of Miraculous Power). Ṛddhi means miraculous power, and Pada means leg, which are the four samadhis of aspiration, mind, diligence, and investigation. They are the basis and cause of miraculous powers such as flying in the sky, hence they are called the Four Legs of Miraculous Power. The Five Faculties are called "Pañcendriya" in Sanskrit (Sanskrit: pañcendriya, Romanized Sanskrit: pañcendriya, Literal meaning: Five Faculties). Pañca means five, and Indriya means "Idi Parameshvarya" (Sanskrit: idi parameśvarya, Romanized Sanskrit: idi parameśvarya, Literal meaning: Independence), meaning powerful, which are faith, diligence, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom. With the power of these five, wholesome roots corresponding to the division of liberation arise in the capable mind-stream. Therefore, because they have the leading role in generating wholesome roots, they are called the Five Faculties. The Five Powers.
