becomes. That is called unstable. Any horse that first goes elsewhere, and then goes elsewhere, because the pace is completely absent, that is called unstable gait. Any body that is bent, any body that is uneven, that is called uneven shape, not suitable for walking on the road. The back is very long, the body is like a crocodile, know that the shape is ugly, without training and beauty. Because these are flawed, the wise should know the flaws. Now it is to show the merits, when the characteristics are told, the ears, tail, spine, etc., the merits are great and obedient to the mind. Obedient to the mind means that the mind is निश्चित (Sanskrit Devanagari: निश्चित, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: niścita, Chinese literal meaning: certain) to itself. The body is without distraction, and complete with all merits, away from distraction, that is called non-distraction, is the second. The upper body is very strong, the chest is wide, runs powerfully, and looks at the navel, know that this is the third merit. Like walking in the sky, very happy to run, runs like there is no interval, that is the fourth great merit. Initially, in the middle, and at the end, runs evenly, neither high nor low, that is the fifth merit of the horse. Not too short nor too long, without calming the distraction, the horse runs, always stays well, that is the sixth. When first ridden, walks straight for a hundred bow-lengths, runs powerfully and quickly, that is the seventh merit that is told. Lifting the feet in the air, appears like walking, the ground only appears a little, that is considered the eighth merit. Any limb of the horse, runs by just touching, knows the mind by just urging, that is the ninth supreme merit. Any beginning is moderate, even if painted with beautiful colors, it appears beautiful, the reins are well fed, that is called handsome appearance. Walks without confusion, appears like walking in the sky, any characteristic that is non-attachment, that is the eleventh merit. When urged to do something, quickly stands up and engages, and understands the change of words, that is the best twelfth merit.

Arising without hindrance, Stopping without effort, Which quality of which virtue, Is possessed, this is the thirteenth. The action of throwers, Even if struck by an arrow, Proceeding without fear, This is the fourteenth virtue. By the power of which virtue, Proceeding like a bird, Running with the continuity of power, This virtue is the fifteenth. Thus, the virtues have been thoroughly explained, Even if possessing a slight characteristic is acceptable, These virtues are all possessed, Which excellent horse, in the beginning and end, Whose virtues are always unchanging, And who can run well, That horse is highly praised. Thus, the running has been explained to you, What is the use of asking others? From the chapter on the qualities of the horse in the Shalihotra Sutra, the thirty-third chapter. The name "Possessing Skillfulness," What is this, and what is its cause? By what characteristics is it known? What is its cure like? When the son asked thus, The great sage Shalihotra, Words that follow the meaning, Spoke of the characteristics of possessing skillfulness: Skillfulness should be placed at the top, That is where shame, fear, etc., are. Whoever performs these, That is said to be possessing skillfulness. Therefore, fearlessness, bad conduct, Lack of affection, harshness, and untamedness, Like the skillfulness of a fruit, It is said because it holds faults. Therefore, a horse possessing these faults, Is also called possessing skillfulness. Which horse is fierce and untamed, Which one becomes angry? All of them are possessing skillfulness, They are not autonomous. When dressed, it becomes agitated and fears seeing objects, It changes and acts untamed, It cannot be ridden, And after being ridden, it jumps, It becomes agitated and kicks from afar, It bites and causes people to fall, Even if whipped, it does not stay still, And it kicks repeatedly, It also abandons the trainer, And acts as if rolling over, Even if the load is well placed, It throws it on the ground, For the sake of harming the trainer, It spins like a whirling torch, It turns its back like an elephant, And bends over again and again, It kicks with its teeth and hooves, It also causes trees to fall, And it repeatedly throws itself into ravines.
