In the north of the snowy land, In a place like the abode of the Lord of Gods, The great sage Shalihotra, While performing a fire sacrifice, Well-learned, endowed with abundant knowledge, A son asked his father: 'Possessing virtue, knowing all dharmas, Skilled in the Veda of Horse Life, How did this healing of horses Come to be?' The great sage, radiant with splendor, Said, 'Listen carefully.' In the past, horses freely Roamed and dwelt in the sky, With food and behavior as they pleased, They lived freely. For all, of the body, Due to habit, no disease arose. From when, my son, Were they made into riding animals? From then on, harmful Diseases afflicted them. From then on, suffering arose in my mind, I performed great austerities, And pleased the god Brahma, Thus, I obtained the method of healing. Healing the pain of the body, Likewise, limb conditioning and, The healing of foals, The nature of poison, medicine, and, Nourishment, exorcism of disease, and, Stimulating appetite is the eighth. Thus, the Veda of Horse Life, This is explained as eight branches. The essence of these eight branches, Son, please listen carefully. The essence of the Sutra is the first, After that is the second. The third here is the body, The fourth is healing. The fifth is foal medicine, The sixth is the latter of the latter. Indicating this and that action, The essence of accomplishment is the seventh.
