One should also accept (this method) for the purpose of making a living. The northward movement of the sun is an auspicious time, the days of the week are Mars and the Sun, the sixth, eighth, fifth, and tenth days of the lunar month, the fourth and fourteenth days, the first and ninth days, one should avoid starting to learn. The remaining date numbers are auspicious. Furthermore, listen to the advice of astrologers. For those who are gentle, swift, agile, fierce, the Pleiades, and except for the Rohini star, it is always auspicious for people to learn skills. These constellations, as well as the Dhanishta constellation, are also auspicious, and one should begin with planets that are not despised and at a good hour. At such an auspicious time, the student wears clean clothes, and wears a white thread to honor the Brahmins, anoints the body with white fragrance, wears a white rosary, and wears white clothes, let them begin to learn. Similarly, the Kshatriya caste, all attire is red, similarly, the Vaishya caste are all yellow, let all the gods participate. Brahmins worship Brahma, Kshatriyas worship Indra, and Vaishyas worship the Wind God. Everyone, without distinction, worships Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Shalihotra. After offering them flowers, incense, and abundant food, below them, satisfy the fire god Savitri with ghee. Give food to the Brahmins. Then, with a son as a reward, offer the reward to the teacher, in a clean and decorated place, the student faces west, and the teacher faces east and says: Always diligent in work, child, you should learn. Even if it means sacrificing your life, you should please the guru, what need is there to mention wealth? Do not antagonize the guru, Brahmins, and landlords, and you should not antagonize horses either. Everything that I have said, child, you should strive to learn. Similarly, even if you become poor, do not learn from books. What is learned from books contradicts both worlds. First of all, all these things, the son should learn medicine. What has not been learned should also be abandoned, listen to everything I say. Fifteen, two, and fourteen, two, plus the eighth day, as well as earthquakes, childbirth, and trees, and places pervaded by impurity.

The nature of self being impure, the mind being confused by illness, the great wind moving, and when thunder roars, this teaching should be abandoned, and the son should uphold the treatises. After upholding the treatises, one should grasp the meaning of the treatises. After grasping the meaning of the treatises, one should then become accustomed to practice. Merely knowing the treatises, only seeing the tasks of the work, engaging in the work of healing, both of these will become meaningless. When engaging in the work of healing, you should always care for the horses. Even if threatened by unbearable illness, you should not abandon it. Even for a horse that cannot be cured, it should be treated with reason. If not treated, it will surely die. Even if treated, there is no certainty. For a horse tormented by illness, the illness will spread to other horses. It is said in the treatises that it should be abandoned. Please listen to the way of abandoning from me. It should be placed far away from the stable, with a guardian. Whatever the condition of the sick horse, it is not reasonable to abandon it completely. Abandoning a sick, weak, and old horse is like healing a Brahmin. If a horse has bad characteristics, do not buy it at the time of purchase. If it is born in one's own home, it should be given to a Brahmin from another place. If an ominous sign appears, this horse should be given away as charity. Not harming life is the best way to prolong life. One should observe and cherish sentient beings, therefore, one should keep as many horses as one can heal. If one can make it comfortable, one should not strive to keep more. If a horse is left in suffering, it will destroy Dharma, benefit, and desire. Furthermore, the work of a king ruling the country depends on horses, therefore you should respect them, and likewise, you should also respect teachers, lamas, and Brahmins. By doing so, you will gain glory. If you do otherwise, you will fall closer to downfall from depravity. You will surely fall into hell. If one abides in the right path, one will effortlessly obtain fame, merit, longevity, and the supreme glory of all Dharma, benefit, and desire. After saying these words, the learner (mother) promised, and then the teacher, at an auspicious time, without distraction, let this student begin to learn. After that, constantly.
