Depletion is exhaustion, and anthills are also high from accumulation. To make reductions from gatherings, only this is wise. Whether dwelling in the forest or at home, whatever benefits others and oneself, the activities of giving and reciting, etc., should not be done meaninglessly day and night. Even if one with attachment dwells in the forest, faults will arise; even if a disciplined one dwells at home, they can still tame their senses. Just as wild beasts dwelling in the forest are wrathful, so too are excellent horses dwelling at home tamed. Holy ones eagerly engage in blameworthy actions, and forests attached to worldly things are places of fault. Engaging in actions that are not blameworthy, and turning away from desire, the home itself is a grove of asceticism. The mind should protect the Dharma. Intelligence should be protected by application. The body should be protected by cleanliness, and lineage should be protected by conduct. One should always give charity, and not be miserly towards people. Wealth, even if used, will not be exhausted, but it will be exhausted due to a lack of merit. Giving will not exhaust it, and not using it will not increase it. Other things accumulated in the past, even if used well, will be exhausted by depletion. What use is wealth that does not say "giving"? Giving will also increase it, just as even if water is drawn from a well, the water will increase greatly every day. Whoever has Dharma has happiness, whoever does not have Dharma is to be blamed, because Dharma understands the world, do not abandon it for the sake of wealth. Miserly people, desiring wealth, create all kinds of suffering, if they seek Dharma, they will not be harmed by afflictions again. Cleanliness is superior to all, the cleanliness of wealth is especially excellent. Wherever there is wealth, there is cleanliness, clean land and water are clean. True cleanliness is the cleanliness of the mind, the cleanliness of taming the senses, and the cleanliness of loving-kindness towards sentient beings, the cleanliness of water is the fifth. It will not be moved by shaking, nor disturbed by contempt, it is called a person without anger, this is the characteristic of a holy person. The words of poor people, even if spoken wisely and pleasantly, spoken in time and speaking usefully, no one will listen. Praise and strength and argument, wisdom and human effort, whatever cannot be obtained by anything, who will grieve for it? Happiness or suffering, obtain it.

Without attaining liberation, without traversing what should be traversed, without finding what should be found, if one thing is accomplished, what is there to grieve? Wherever the lord of death is, one dies there. Wherever glory resides, there is perfection. Led by one's own karma, one's self goes to that very place. Whatever virtuous and non-virtuous actions are done, whatever was done in the past, just as one behaved in previous lives, it follows after the doer. Evil people scrutinize the faults of others, even as small as mustard seeds, but their own faults, even as large as bilva fruits, they do not see. All dependence on others is suffering, all self-reliance is happiness. The characteristics of happiness and suffering, in short, are these. After happiness comes suffering, and after suffering comes happiness. The happiness and suffering of people revolve completely like a wheel. Whatever has passed is already gone, whatever is yet to come is far away. Whatever does not become a cause for grief, let it remain as it has come to be. This is the sixth chapter from the treatise on the conduct of King Chanakya. No one is a friend to anyone, nor is anyone an enemy to anyone. Friends and enemies arise from one's own power. Sorrow breeds enemies, fear breeds weariness, trust becomes a place of change, and the heart suffers. The two letters that spell 'friend,' who can transform this jewel? If you always want to be friendly, then avoid the messenger's trading profits, and looking at another's wife. These three faults should be abandoned. The unbearable force of the wind rising, and the great waves of the ocean, it may be possible to prevent the elements from arising, but not so with the mind that is attached. Fire, water, women, fools, pretenders, and kings, these six, although they do not immediately take life, should always be attended to with caution and preparedness. Because others do not recognize their own faults, one should also know one's own faults. Just as a tortoise withdraws its limbs, one should conceal one's own virtues. If the nature of others is not examined, then like a deer lured by the song of a hunter, one is deceived by artificial words, therefore one should know the nature of others. Roots and blue water are low, disciples are seduced by gentleness, gods have no wealth through asceticism, but all are gathered by virtue. What is the obstacle to a friend?
