The two, fierce and utterly untamed, with evil nature and delighting in harm, are solely creators of harm. Even if adorned with wisdom, evil people should be abandoned; even if a snake is adorned with jewels, does it not still inspire fear? Whoever constantly speaks harsh words that are hard to bear, speaks and is intolerably angry without reason, behaving like a highly venomous snake, who would not fear such an evil nature? Speaking deeply, sweetly, and appropriately, being subdued, truthful, devoted, and independent, knowing the essence of things well, being skilled in the true meaning, most servants become independent. Being diligent and content, sleeping well and fully awake, being equally steadfast in pleasure and pain, such a servant is hard to find in the world. Intolerant, hard to please, stingy and fond of wealth, abusive, weak, and extremely fierce, such a servant should be abandoned by the master. Fond of deceit and hypocrisy, speaking and devoid of good fortune, fearing and terrified without cause, the king should abandon such a one. After six months or a year, the king should reconcile. One should cherish oneself and fight closely with enemies. Entrusting work to fools leads to bad reputation, loss of purpose, and falling into hell; the king incurs these three faults. If entrusting work to the wise, fame, life, qualities, relatives, and wealth increase, and one will be reborn in a higher realm. Whatever actions, whether virtuous or non-virtuous, are performed, are related to the king of good conduct and misconduct. Therefore, in order to accomplish dharma and desire, the lord of the earth should always connect ascetics and brahmins with benefit and happiness. The fifth chapter of the Treatise on the Conduct of King Canaka is complete. One should rely on those with qualities and abandon those without qualities; the wise have all qualities, while fools have only faults. Always associate with the noble, be like the noble ones, act in accordance with the noble, and do nothing evil. Ant hills and honey, and the waxing moon, the wealth of kings and the wealth of beggars, increase little by little. Eye medicine
