Words of the Wise. These six are like water bubbles: The army of the weak is the king, The army of children is women, The army of fools is the silent, The army of thieves is lies. However a person, becomes proficient in scriptures, Then, his wisdom, will surely give rise to distinction. However a person, performs virtuous deeds with wisdom, Then, all matters, will be accomplished, there is no doubt about this. Greed, negligence, and credulity, these three deceive a person. Therefore, greed, negligence, and credulity, should not be had. One who ruins things in secret, but speaks sweetly to your face, like a pot of poison with milk on top, such a friend should be abandoned. Association with bad people, will also cause good people to fall. Even water that is very clear, will be muddied by mud. Whoever eats the leftover food after serving guests, whoever does not commit evil is wise, whoever helps you in secret is a friend, whoever acts with honesty and without deceit is Dharma. A place without elders is not a place for gatherings, A place without Dharma holders is not a place for elders. A place without truth is not Dharma, A place associated with deception is not truth. Where there is heart and joy, there is auspiciousness, whoever does not rely on others can survive, whoever gets along with their own people can accumulate, whoever can conquer enemies has pride. Whoever is without pride is wise, whoever is not deluded by desire has splendor, whoever becomes relaxed is a friend, whoever tames their senses is a hero. A place without a king should not be inhabited, A place where women are the masters, A place with many leaders should not be inhabited, One should inhabit a place with a wise king. In youth, protected by the father, in adolescence, protected by the husband, in old age, protected by the son, women cannot live freely. Naked bathing and drunken elephants, a cow believing in her newborn calf, and frogs in a place without water, should all be avoided for a long time. A person tormented by wealth has no relatives or friends, A person tormented by desire has no fear or shame, A person tormented by hunger has no strength or radiance, A person tormented by illness has no sleep or happiness. Lineage is shown through conduct, A country is

Language reveals, affection shows through diligence, food is shown by the body. Whatever is in accordance with the mind, even if far away, feels near; whatever is not pleasing to the mind, even if nearby, feels distant. A person's intelligence, if lacking eloquence, seems insufficient, and a treatise in the hands of a wicked person is like a blind man's beautiful wife, unable to bring joy to sentient beings. Wealth is not found in every mountain rock, pearls are not commonly found in fish, sandalwood is not found in every forest, and saints are not everywhere. For two-legged beings, wealth is obvious, and foolish people should be completely abandoned, like hidden thorns, the barbs of words cause harm. The wise should always engage their children in various kinds of knowledge, and those who are intelligent and have perfect wisdom are always revered. If one does not learn knowledge in youth, parents are enemies. Like a water bird among swans, one is not beautiful among many. If you want to broaden your mind, you should learn a verse or half a verse, a quarter of a verse, or even a single letter, and do not let a day pass in vain. Even if one has beauty and youth, and comes from a noble lineage, if one lacks wisdom, one will not be beautiful, like the flowers of the kimshuka tree. Indulgence leads to faults, and beating increases virtues, therefore, for children and students, one should beat rather than indulge. Until the age of five, one should indulge, until the age of ten, one should beat, and when the age reaches sixteen, one should treat the child like a friend. With a very good fragrance and abundant flowers, even one tree can fill the entire forest with fragrance, and a good child in a family is like that. One who is naturally good and has a noble lineage, such a good child, like a lion in the family, illuminates the family like the moon. A single withered tree, once ignited by fire, will burn the entire forest, and a bad child in a family is like that. Merely reciting words, and speculating on other treatises, all of these are full of afflictions, and one who is not confused in actions is wise. Some decline due to ignorance, some decline due to carelessness, some decline due to their nature, and some decline due to their own faults. A wise person with knowledge is one thing, and a wise person who is proficient in treatises is another.
