One should observe the color and location, as well as the quantity and mucus, and also the urine and feces, and vomiting, etc. The word "etc." refers to understanding from hearing the sounds of the ears and the gurgling sounds of the intestines, as well as the sounds of breaking finger joints, etc. Oiliness refers to examining the odor of the body, feces, wounds, etc. Touch refers to knowing the tactile sensations of coldness and warmth, as well as softness and roughness, and movement. The taste in the mouth should be understood from questioning. Similarly, ease of vomiting and difficulty of vomiting, as well as hardness and softness of the stomach, and what is seen in dreams, and what one is particularly happy about, and from what time the disease started, and the birth star, and intimacy and lack of intimacy, and happiness and suffering, etc., should be inquired about. It should be understood that these are only showing one aspect. Similarly, it should also be understood from inference. For the time being, one should understand the essence of the body and the deterioration of taste from what is discharged and flows out. Bees gathering indicates sweetness. Similarly, the warmth of the stomach is understood from digestion. Strength is understood from the ability to exert effort. The manifestation of disease signs is understood from liking and disliking. The degree of disease is understood from the difference in behavior. The exhaustion of life is understood from the omens of death. Nature, courage, joy, and habit are understood from constant association. Furthermore, Caraka said: With the light of the lamp of knowledge, The nature of the patient's disease, Before it is understood, any combination, That will not cure the diseases. That's what was said. If someone asks, what medicine is suitable for whom, and how does it possess that characteristic? It is not always the case, but rather, understanding the differences in the stages of the disease, and like that, observing every moment of the disease, is what makes a doctor. Because a doctor who observes and understands repeatedly and continuously every moment and all stages is the one who understands the differences in the stages of the disease. Like that, by observing every moment of the patient, those (treatments) will arise. Therefore, it is said: Through habit, one will surely become familiar, It is the manifestation of accomplishing tasks. That's what was said. Habit refers to repeatedly engaging in the work of healing.

It is necessary to know for sure in order to gain a definite understanding of medicine. It is not enough to merely master the medical treatises. What kind of definite understanding is it? "All actions accomplished are clearly shown." This means that because it accomplishes all actions, it is the accomplishment of actions, and to clearly show it is to make it appear. To illustrate this point, it is said: "The good and bad of jewels must be known, it does not arise from treatises alone." This means that knowing the good and bad of emeralds and so on, habit is the main factor. Through habit, one can recognize that this is good and this is bad. Even if there is a treatise on examining jewels here, it does not arise from merely knowing the treatise. Only through the habit of repeatedly seeing many jewels can the knowledge arise that "this is a good jewel, this is not." Similarly, if someone knows and masters the medical treatises, and is also experienced in practice, that doctor can perform the work of completely curing diseases, thereby giving life to beings. Without being experienced and skilled in practice, it is not enough to merely know the medical treatises, nor is it enough to rely solely on habit without hearing. Therefore, the word "alone" is mentioned, because both are needed. Diseases are of three kinds: "Some arise from the sins of this life, some arise from the sins of the past life, others arise from the combination of the two." This means that some patients are due to the sins of this life, that is, the sins of the present life. The cause of the disease is called sin. Similarly, some are due to the sins of the past life, which are due to the ripening of the sins of one's own past negative actions. Others are due to the combination of the two, that is, the sins of the present life and the sins of the past life, as well as the combination of the two. There are three in total. Therefore, it should be known that there are three types of diseases. Furthermore, in what order are these characteristics spoken of? "The basis of diseases arising from sins is spoken of in this way."
