The Commentary on the Essence of the Eight Limbs, Called "Moonlight on the Meaning of Words" He who delights in the moon. The Commentary on the Essence of the Eight Limbs, Called "Moonlight on the Meaning of Words." He who delights in the moon. In Sanskrit: Padārtha candraka prabhāvatī nāma aṣṭāṃga hṛdaya vṛtti. In Tibetan: The Commentary on the Essence of the Eight Limbs, Called "Moonlight on the Meaning of Words." Homage to the Three Jewels! Homage to the Bhagavan, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, the Medicine Guru, the King of Lapis Lazuli Light! He who seizes the inexhaustible treasure of words, The lord of gods among gods, greatly praised, The moonlight of the extensive explanation of the meaning of words, I shall clearly reveal for the benefit of all. By the glorious, unobscured deity, Because the essence is truly guided, The guru's words are the very truth, Having clearly understood, I shall begin to compose. With wisdom that is profound and renowned, Born from the ocean of virtuous milk, He who delights in the moon, like the moon, Is the pacifier of the heat of non-understanding. The disease of all afflictions such as desire, Constantly connected, pervades all bodies. He who eliminates desire, ignorance, and anger, The unprecedented physician, to him I pay homage. As it is said, the composer of the treatise must pay homage to the deity he desires to manifest, therefore this first verse is spoken, and it is connected to the physician who eliminates diseases such as desire, to him I pay homage. Here, afflictions such as desire are desire and hatred, and so on. Afflictions such as desire are those that harm and torment, therefore they are diseases, meaning they cause suffering to body and mind. Furthermore, why do they greatly torment sentient beings, and by what are they eliminated? Why is it like that? It is said to be constantly connected, meaning constantly following, and always connected in all times and places, and the meaning of being co-emergent, and without this, samsara will never arise. "Pervades all bodies" means that it is both the body and all, therefore it is called "all bodies," meaning men, livestock, elephants, horses, cattle, yaks, insects, ants, and all bodies connected to them are supremely pervasive.

Therefore, it is called all-pervasive, meaning that it is universally present in all things with roots and seeds. It eliminates desire, ignorance, and hatred. Among them, desire is the attachment and clinging to various realms. Ignorance is the inability to clearly recognize and understand what is and is not. Hatred is the mind's aversion, without attachment to anything. Therefore, I prostrate to the unparalleled physician who eliminates and destroys these. That is, I prostrate and pay homage to the unparalleled physician who possesses a wondrous and rare path, because this physician has an innate nature, is always connected, universally present, has a nature similar to incurable diseases with roots, and is able to destroy them. Other physicians, if diseases have these characteristics such as plagues, are unable to cure them. Alternatively, that which has nothing else before it is called unparalleled. This indicates that it itself is the beginning of all things. Because paying homage to the manifested god of desire is primary, all initiated actions will quickly be completed without obstacles and bear fruit. Therefore, after paying homage to the god of desire, the medical tantras are then expounded, and the beginning of all these tantras is for this purpose. Similarly, here also, four tasks such as connection need to be done, but since the words appear sequentially, it is not possible to express these contents simultaneously. Therefore, first, let us temporarily explain the connection. That is, because by explaining the connection, the listener's engagement can be achieved. Therefore, in all treatises, the connection should be explained first. As it is said, it is necessary to explain the connection, and its necessity lies in the fact that no one will accept all treatises and any actions if the necessity is not stated. Here, the connection refers to the characteristics of method and disease, and the science of life that arises from the method and pacifies the disease. The connection between these methods and the characteristics arising from the method is the connection. The necessity is also to show the function of the elements and nature, which is the purpose.
